This invention relates to peptides and their use for modulating sodium channels. More particularly, the present invention relates to peptides from the venom of the tarantulaand their use in methods of inhibiting Na1.7 and for treating or preventing conditions associated with Na1.7 activity such as neuropathic, inflammatory and nociceptive pain.

Spider venom peptides and methods of use for modulating sodium channels

The invention relates to relatively short peptides (termed J-Superfamily conotoxin peptides, J-conotoxins or J-conotoxin peptides herein), about 25 residues in length, which are naturally available in minute amounts in the venom of the cone snails or analogous to the naturally available peptides, and which preferably include two disulfide bonds. The J-conotoxins are useful for treating disorders involving voltage gated ion channels and/or receptors.

J-superfamily conotoxin peptides

This invention relates to an isolated, synthetic or recombinant peptide, wherein the peptide comprises the sequence: C K G K G A XaaC R XaaXaaXaaY XaaC C XaaG XaaC R XaaXaaR C SEQ ID NO: 1 wherein Xaa, Xaa, Xaa, Xaa, Xaaand Xaaare independently selected from serine and threonine; Xaais selected from arginine and lysine; Xaais selected from aspartic acid and glutamic acid; and Xaais selected from glycine, alanine, valine, leucine and isoleucine.

Omega conotoxin peptides

The present invention discloses proteinaceous compounds that comprise at least a biologically active portion of a taipan natriuretic peptide (TNP) or a variant or derivative thereof. The invention also relates to the use of these compounds in methods for stimulating vasodilation, natriuresis, diuresis, renin-suppression, bactericidal activity, weight-loss or bone growth in a mammalian host. In specific embodiments, the compounds are useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising these peptides and the use of these peptides in the prophylaxis or treatment of conditions, such as but not limited to, pain, inflammation, incontinence, cardiovascular conditions and mood disorders.

&#x3c7;-conotoxin peptides (-1)

An isolated, synthetic or recombinant X-conotoxin peptide having the ability to inhibit neuronal amine transporter comprising the following sequence of amino acids: Cys Cys Gly Tyr Lys Leu Cys Xaa5 Xaa6 Cys, SEQ ID NO:3, where Xaa5 and Xaa6 are independently absent or represent any amino acid residue except Cys; or a sequence in which Gly, Tyr, Lys or Leu are subject to conservative amino acid substitution or side chain modification with the proviso that the peptide is not MrIA, MrIB, Mar2, CMrVIA, Bn1.5, Mr1.3 or Au1.4; or a salt, ester, amide, prodrug or cyclised derivative thereof.

SEQ ID NO: 1 comprises the amino acid sequence SGTVGR.

&#x3c9;conotoxin peptides

The present invention relates to novel peptides and derivatives thereof useful as selective &#x3b1;-adrenoceptor antagonists which ability of inhibiting the agonist action of agonist noradrenaline on the &#x3b1;-adrenoceptor is greater than their ability of inhibiting the action of agonist noradrenaline on the other &#x3b1;-adrenoceptors. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising these peptides.
