A signal converter circuit (,) includes an analog to digital converter (,) for converting an input analog signal into a digital signal. The circuit (,) also includes a DAC,with segment shuffler for shuffling the digital signal segments output by the analog to digital converter (,) to improve linearity of the converted digital signal. In addition, a shuffle controller (,) connected to the DAC (,) is for adaptively turning the shuffler of DAC (,) on and off based on a parameter, such as amplitude, of the input analog signal. The adaptive segment shuffling enables a lower performance data converter to be used in devices requiring a high dynamic range for converting signals over a wide range of signal amplitudes.

In a digital preprocessing system for processing a digital signal for analog transmission, the digital signal is up-sampled to produce a digital up-sampled signal having signal components in a plurality of Nyquist bands including a first Nyquist band and a plurality of super-Nyquist bands at higher frequencies than the first Nyquist band, wherein the first Nyquist band includes a baseband signal component and a plurality of aliased signal components. Thereafter, one of the plurality of signal components in the first Nyquist band is selected from the digital up-sampled signal. Finally, the selected one of the plurality of signal components is output at a frequency that will cause a digital to analog converter to output an aliased signal component in a super-Nyquist band nearer an anticipated peak amplitude of a filtering characteristic of the digital to analog converter than an aliased signal component in the super-Nyquist band that would be output by the digital to analog converter processing the baseband signal component.

The addition and removal of a dither signal takes place by generation of a first signal (102) and a second signal (104) by a first signal source (151) and a second signal source (152). A dither generator (103) is provided that generates a dither signal (106) that is added to the first signal (102) and subtracted from the second signal (104). The first signal (102) with dither added, and the second signal (104) with dither subtracted enter respective Digital to Analog Converters (DACs) (109, 111) and are converted to analog signal equivalents. Finally, the respective analog signal equivalents are summed together to form a composite signal with the dither signal (106) substantially eliminated.

Method and apparatus for the addition and removal of a dither signal

A multi-channel transmitter (200) in accordance with the present invention overcomes the disadvantages of applying adaptive antenna array technology to multi-channel communication systems. The multi-channel transmitter includes a channel processing element (210), a plurality of radio frequency processing elements (206), and an antenna array (102). The channel processing element includes a channel processor adapted to receive a communication signal from a communication network, a splitter (216) coupled to an output of the channel processor for producing a plurality of substantially identical processed digital communication signal outputs. A plurality of gain and phase adjusters (214) in the channel processing element are coupled to the substantially identical processed digital communication signal outputs. An output of each phase and gain adjuster (214) is coupled to a plurality of up-converters (212), which each produce a digital intermediate frequency output. The plurality of radio frequency processing elements (206) are each coupled to an output of the digital up-converters (212). The radio frequency processing elements (206) each include a digital summer (224), a digital-to-analog converter (222), and a radio frequency processor (220). The antenna array has a plurality of antenna elements (104), each coupled to an output of the plurality of radio frequency processing elements (206).

A multi-channel digital transceiver (400) receives uplink radio frequency signals and converts these signals to digital intermediate frequency signals. Digital signal processing, including a digital converter module (426), is employed to select digital intermediate frequency signals received at a plurality of antennas (412) and to convert these signals to baseband signals. The baseband signals are processed to recover a communication channel therefrom. Downlink baseband signals are also processed and digital signal processing within the digital converter module (426) up converters and modulates the downlink baseband signals to digital intermediate frequency signals. The digital intermediate frequency signals are converted to analog radio frequency signals, amplified and radiated from transmit antennas (420).

A receiver (100), transmitter (200) and transceiver (400) in accordance with the present invention overcome the disadvantages of applying adaptive antenna array technology to multi-channel communication systems. Multi-channel radio frequency (RF) signals received via an adaptive antenna array (102) are converted from an analog form to a digital form prior to splitting and processing to recover communication channels contained therein. A number of digital communication signals are digitally combined into a multi-channel digital signal and converted from the digital form to an analog radio frequency form prior to transmission from the adaptive antenna array.

A split frequency band signal digitizer (10) includes a first mixer (18) for translating a split-band signal (200) about a multiple of the sampling frequency. The split-band signal so translated is then communicated to an analog-to-digital converter (26). The digitized signal is then analyzed to recover an original portion of the split-band signal and a second portion of the signal aliased into a single Nyquist band.

A digital-to-analog converter (DAC, 300) utilizes a coarse DAC (306) and fine DAC (315) to produce an analog output signal having both low glitch energy and good linearity performance. An individual desiring to operate a pager via voice commands sends a message to a repository of voice recognition codebooks requesting access to a particular codebook. The repository device(s) respond by transmitting the codebook of that individual to at least one pager, which stores the codebook therein. In a second embodiment, each individual operating a pager by voice commands is provided with a codebook module, which contains suitable memory storage having at least that operator's codebook stored therein. By inserting the codebook module (or card) into the pager, that pager becomes at least partially controllable by the voice commands of that operator. The codebook module may be easily removed to permit the communication device to be rapidly reprogrammed by inserting the codebook of another operator.

To program a communication device to respond to voice commands, an individual desiring to operate the communication device sends a message to a repository of voice recognition codebooks. The repository device(s) responds by transmitting the codebook of that individual to at least one communication device, which stores the codebook therein.
