The embodiments herein describe a seismic source that includes at least two firing heads connected to a shared reservoir of compressed gas. When underwater, a controller can instruct the firing heads to fire at the same time or at different times to create gas bubbles that generate seismic energy for identifying structures underneath a body of water. If the firing heads fire at the same, the resulting gas bubble may coalesce to form a single bubble, depending on the size of the respective bubbles and the separation distance between the firing heads. In one embodiment, the firing heads are attached at opposite ends of the shared reservoir (although this is not a requirement). The length of the reservoir, which dictates in part the separation distance of the firing heads, can be set so that gas bubbles generated by the firing heads at substantially the same time coalesce.

Seismic source apparatus

Embodiments herein use an acquisition vessel towing a plurality of receivers and a seismic source and a source vessel towing a seismic source to acquire seismic data corresponding to a subsurface below a bottom surface of a body of water. When activating the seismic source on the acquisition vessel, the plurality of receivers acquire survey data for a central coverage area underneath a swath defined by the plurality of receivers. However, when activating the seismic source on the source vessel, the plurality of receivers acquires survey data for a side coverage area. The embodiments herein control a separation distance between the acquisition and source vessels so that there is a gap between the central and side coverage areas resulting from activating the seismic sources towed by those vessels. This gap can reduce the cost and time required to perform the seismic survey.

Sparse seismic data acquisition

Methods, systems, and apparatuses are disclosed for conducting reconnaissance marine seismic surveys. In one example method of acquiring a marine seismic survey, a plurality of streamers are towed behind an acquisition vessel, the plurality of streamers defining a swath. An independent source is towed by an independent source vessel above one or more of the plurality of towed streamers.
