Foamed polyurethane articles, such as a sponges, sheets, tapes or ribbons, blocks or other molded, extruded or cast article which foamed polyurethane articles exhibit an antimicrobial benefit and are particularly useful in the formation of cleaning articles. Processes for the manufacture of such cleaning articles based on hydrophilic polyurethane foams exhibit an antimicrobial benefit and their use are also described.

Hydrophilic polyurethane foam articles comprising an antimicrobial compound

Polyurethane foam products with controlled release of agents and additives, if any, are formed from the reaction products of an aqueous formulation of a limited quantity of superabsorbent polymer, an agent or agents from the group of detergents, abrasives, waxes, polishes, drugs, cosmetics, biologicals, volatiles, odor absorbing and controlling compositions and water soluble chemicals, optionally selective additives, and water with a predetermined ratio of hydrophilic urethane prepolymer to provide a polymerizing mixture. The agents and additives, if any, are incorporated directly into the matrix of the formed foam product to increase the number of times that the formed foam products can be used. The products and methods include a formed foam product with an abrasive material uniformly dispersed therein and/or formed on at least one exterior face of the products. Sized granular formed foam product can be comminuted to provide filters materials and animal litter.

Polyurethane foam products with controlled release of agents and additives

Layered composite materials adapted to be formed into predetermined shaped components disposed for contact with moisture and body fluids having a cover layer for contact with the moisture and body fluids and a foam layer including one or more sorbents in a hydrophilic polyurethane foam matrix, wherein the foam layer is bonded to the cover layer so that moisture and body fluids in contact with the cover layer are transferred through the cover layer to the foam layer. The foam layer is established by combining an aqueous mixture including the sorbent in a predetermined ratio with the hydrophilic polyurethane. The foam layer may include other active ingredients such as odor absorption and bactericidal components, thermal phase change components and finely ground rubber tire materials to vary the characteristics of the composite material. Additionally, citric acid and surfactant compounds may be used to increase the concentration of the sorbent in the aqueous mixture and maintain the pumping fluidity of the aqueous mixture. Methods for making the layered composite materials are also described.

Composite material for absorbing and dissipating body fluids and moisture

A composite biosorption material is formed of a hydrophilic urethane binder containing immobilized bioactive organisms of at least about one micron in size and having active sites for binding and removing noxious materials such as metal ions from an effluent such as a waste water stream. To form the composite, a prepolymer is prepared by heating polyethylene glycol, having an average molecular weight of about 1000, to over 200.degree. F. up to 350.degree. F., preferably greater than 220.degree. F., and reacting a diisocyanate with the heated polyethylene glycol while mixing to form the prepolymer. After cooling, the prepolymer is mixed with an aqueous slurry containing the organisms such as Datura innoxia cells, and optionally a surfactant and bactericide, in a weight ratio such as 1:1 to 6:1, and the resultant mixture is cured to form the composite material containing a dry weight of the organisms such as about 15% to 90%. The diisocyanate may be a mixture of toluene diisocyanate 2-4 and toluene diisocyanate 2-6, and at a ratio of diisocyanate to polyethylene glycol to stoichiometrically end cap the polyethylene glycol with a content of isocyanate groups of between 2% and 14%.

Hydrophilic urethane binder immobilizing organisms having active sites

Solid particles are coated with a polymer coating, by a process that includes, dispersing the uncoated particles in water, containing a wetting agent, adding a liquid polymer coupling agent, so that the dispersed solid particles have a film of the coupling agent, and agitating the mixture while adding a prepolymer. The coupling agent is reacted with the polymer to form polymer coatings on the dispersed particles. Relatively thin polymer coatings can be achieved by this process. As an extension of the process, the core particles can be materials used for abrasive blast cleaning, filtration, separation catalysis, animal feed, drug dispensing, contacting, tumble cleaning, and slow release of active ingredients.
