A ring laser gyroscope includes active cavity containing gain medium, first reflective surfaces coupled to active cavity, medium exciter to excite gain medium, second reflective surfaces coupled to first passive cavity, and third reflective surfaces coupled to second passive cavity. Excited gain medium induces first and second laser fields within active cavity. First plurality of reflective surfaces includes first, second, and third reflective surfaces that reflect light within active cavity. Second plurality of reflective surfaces includes first, fourth, and fifth reflective surfaces that reflect light within first passive cavity. Third plurality of reflective surfaces includes fourth, sixth, and seventh reflective surfaces that reflect light within second passive cavity. First and fourth reflective surfaces are partially transmissive such that they both transmit and reflect light. Second or third cavities induce frequency dependent phase shift on light traveling through ring laser gyroscope causing anomalous dispersion of first and second laser fields passing through gain medium.

A fiber optic alignment device on a crystalline substrate support is disclosed. An exemplary embodiment embodied in a resonator fiber optic gyro is fabricated by a process of forming a crystalline substrate support structure operable to support the first end portion of the optical fiber and the second end portion of the optical fiber; forming a first end V-groove portion and a second end V-groove portion in the support structure; physically coupling the first end portion of the optical fiber to the first end V-groove portion; and physically coupling the second end portion of the optical fiber to the second end V-groove portion.

System and method for fiber based resonator coupling

A method and apparatus are provided for pumping a gas. The method includes the steps of ionizing the gas, separating the ionized gas into groups of positive and negative ions using positive and negative electric fields and separately pulling the groups of positive and negative ions along a channel using the negative and positive electric fields.

Ion micro pump

A navigation system to aid in the navigation through an unknown area. The navigation system includes a plurality of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, at least one a portal terminal and at least one navigation device. The plurality of RFID tags are positioned throughout an area to be traversed. The at least one portal terminal is located near an entrance to the area to be traversed. The at least one portal terminal is adapted to upload a map of the area to be traversed. The map includes the location of each RFID tag. The at least one navigation device is adapted to download the map from the portal terminal. The at least one navigational device is further adapted to display its location in the area to be traversed based at least in part on the detection of one or more of the plurality of RFID tags.

Methods and systems for low power switching are provided. In one embodiment, an optical switching system is provided. The system comprises at least one optically controlled switch adapted to maintain one of an open state and a closed state based on an associated light signal; and at least one light source adapted to output the associated light signal to the at least one switch, wherein the at least one light source cycles the light signal on and off, wherein the at least one light source is cycled on for a sufficient duration of time and with a sufficient periodicity to maintain the optically controlled switch in one of an open state and a closed state.

Efficient protocol for reading RFID tags

A dynamic micro-structured reflector includes a substrate having a generally planar major surface and a plurality of cavities on the planar major surface. Each cavity having at least a first and second sidewalls set at an angle offset from the planar major surface. The first sidewall being a stationary optical face and the second sidewall being a dynamic optical face. The dynamic optical face is deflectable between a first position and a second position. The dynamic optical face in the first position redirects more light back to a light source than the dynamic optical face in the second position. Methods of making a dynamic micro-structured reflector are also disclosed.

Dynamic reflector array and method of making the same

A reconfigurable aperture with an optical backplane. In one embodiment a reconfigurable aperture antenna is disclosed. The reconfigurable aperture includes a plurality of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) and a receiver for each VCSEL. Each receiver is adapted to reconfigure a portion of an aperture in response to an optical feed from an associated VCSEL.

A leak detector having a multi-stage concentrator, consisting of an array of heater elements which desorb analytes in a phased manner, in synch with the sample stream, to maximize sensitivity. The heater elements of the concentrator are coated with adsorber material on both sides of the heater elements, i.e., top and bottom sides, and have small anchor points to minimize power dissipation. The concentrated gas mixture output of the concentrator is electronically injected into a separator, which for separates the constituents of the detected analyte-fluid and recognizing the nature or source of the analyte.

A method of producing a device including the steps of coating a surface of a V-groove substrate with a reflective material, placing a light source in said V-groove substrate. A method of producing a device comprising the steps of coating a surface of a V-groove substrate with a reflective material, placing a light source in said V-groove substrate, placing a light intensity detector in said V-groove substrate, and placing a wave guide structure in said V-groove substrate wherein said reflective material, said light source, said detector and said wave guide structure are positioned in said V-groove substrate so that an amount of light emitted from said light source, which is less than 100%, enters said wave guide structure; and at least some of the light emitted from said light source, that did not enter said wave guide structure reflects from said reflective material and impinges upon said light intensity detector.

Laser light sources having integrated detector and intensity control and methods of producing same

A object detection system, such as a radar, and a method for improving the useful information provided thereby. The system is mounted on a vehicle for providing contact information to the vehicle operator. The method includes recording a baseline noise signal in a contact-free environment. When the system is later used in an operating environment, those returns which fall beyond the ranges of the baseline signal in any given direction, are excluded from the output of the object detection system.

System and technique for enhanced radar object detection

Random pulse generators and generating systems using at least three oscillators. The output signals of at least two of the oscillators are combined to disturb the output signal of a final oscillator. For one configuration, combined output signals of at least two phase shift oscillators are used to modify the feedback signal of a final phase shift oscillator, thus disturbing the output signal of the final oscillator. For another configuration, the output signals of at least two phase shift oscillators are used to drive a subtractor whose output signal is combined with the output signal of a final phase shift oscillator to drive a subsequent subtractor, thus disturbing the output signal of the final oscillator.

Random pulse generator

An electrostatically controlled, micromachined micromechanical capacitor having an adjustable, extensive tuning range. A configuration consists of a set of various sized beams or plates adjacent to a common plate or plates. The pairs of plates are linearly moved relative to each other to provide an adjustable capacitance. The movement of the plates is caused electrostatically by an application of a DC or low frequency voltage to the respective plates. The signals that are processed by these micromechanical capacitors are typically in the megahertz range and higher. The process for micromachining the micromechanical capacitor is similar to the process utilized in integrated circuit fabrication.

Electrostatically operated micromechanical capacitor

A microstructure device having a array of deep lamellar structures resembling parallel plates has sharp high pass cut-off behavior associated with incident TE polarized radiation. When two such microstructures are disposed in an orthogonal orientation, they act like a 2-D array of rectangular waveguides with the cut-off behavior determined by the separation of the respective parallel plates. Another embodiment of the present invention employs a linear drive to articulate the array of coupled parallel plates to tune the filter to the operative incident radiation relatively independent of the angle of incidence. The microstructure finds application placed proximate the focal plane of an array of radiation sensitive material so that very high resolution multispectral images may be generated. When the array is articulated by a linear actuator, a preselected cut-off frequency may be tuned so that multispectral imaging occurs independent of the imaging technology employed, with applications for remote sensing of chemical agents, satellite surveys of agricultural resources, meteorological conditions, or environmental quality. When disposed in a gas absorption cell, opposing an IR source and proximate an IR detector the tunable filter can be used for gas analysis.
