Determining a signal emitter location involves receiving a signal of interest (SOI) at detection devices, generating a time stamp corresponding to the arrival of the SOI at each detection device, and communicating digital data samples and the time stamp to a time-difference of arrival (TDOA) computer system. The TDOA computer system determines a TDOA of the SOI at the detection devices relative to an arrival time at a first one of the detection devices having an earliest time stamp. It determines a first solution to identify the emitter location in accordance with a first TDOA solution method. It evaluates the reliability of the first solution and selectively uses a second solution if the first solution is insufficiently reliable.

Hybrid TDOA closed form hyperbolic and spherical iteration geo-location technique

A code division multiple access (CDMA) communications device includes a CDMA receiver to isolate a CDMA signal, and a processor to generate a quantized sample representation of the CDMA signal. The processor performs a hard correlation between the quantized sample representation of the CDMA signal and a quantized representation of a reference to generate a coarse time alignment. Based upon the coarse time alignment, the processor performs a soft correlation between actual values of the CDMA signal and the reference.

The unattended surveillance device may include a housing to be positioned for unattended surveillance, a video camera associated with or carried by the housing to capture video, and an image processor carried by the housing and cooperating with the video camera. The image processor extracts moving objects in the foreground of the captured video, generates a profile image or sequence of profile images of the extracted moving objects, compresses the sequence of profile images, and generates a surveillance information packet based upon the compressed sequence of profile images. Also, a wireless transmitter or transceiver may be associated with the image processor to transmit the surveillance information packet to a surveillance monitoring station.

An improved method is provided for decoding data in a frequency hopping communications system. The method includes: monitoring transition points between data bits in a demodulated data stream, where the data bits are transmitted to a receiver over different transmission frequencies; determining a frequency over which data bits are transmitted to the receiver; determining a reliability metric for each frequency over which data bits were received, where the reliability metric is based on transition points of data bits transmitted over a given frequency; and performing a decoding operation using the reliability metric for each frequency over which data bits were received.

Method for decoding digital data in a frequency hopping communication system

To avoid signal jamming, a method is provided for selecting a dwell channel on a receiver in a frequency hopping communication system. The method includes: measuring a noise level on channels over which a data signal is received at the receiver; selecting a dwell channel based on the estimated noise levels, where the dwell channel having the lowest noise level amongst a group of permissible channels over which to acquire a signal from a transmitter; and tuning the receiver to the selected dwell channel during a search state in which the receiver attempts to synchronize with a transmitter.

Signal jamming avoidance method for a frequency hopping communication system

A system and method is disclosed for maintaining synchronization in a communication system in which a signal is sent from a transmitter to a receiver which includes a phase lock loop. The receiver compares the output of a Viterbi decoder with the output of a quick decision circuit. The Viterbi decoder, which incorporates traceback, determines the minimum aggregate Euclidean distance for multiple symbols. The quick decision circuit determines the minimum Euclidean distance for a single symbol without decoding the symbol. If the difference in the output signals of the Viterbi decoder and the quick decision circuit is greater than a predetermined threshold, the phase error signal in the phase lock loop is prevented from updating the phase lock loop filter. A synchronization loss detector may also be used to prevent the phase error signal from updating the phase lock loop filter if synchronization loss is detected.

Phase lock loop and method for coded waveforms

An ad hoc method is provided for synchronizing a wireless network. The method involves broadcasting a first signal including a join message from a first node (FN). The method also involves saving a first timestamps in a memory device internal to the FN after broadcasting the first signal. The method further involves generating a signal including a join response message after receiving the first signal. The join response message is comprised of a second timestamp indicating a local time during which the first signal was received at the second node (SN). The method also includes the step of determining an initial time offset by computing a difference between the first timestamp and the second timestamp. The method further includes the steps of generating a request to send (RTS) message at the FN. The FN uses the initial time offset in conjunction with the RTS message to asynchronously communicate with the SN.

Asynchronous dynamic network discovery for low power systems

The surveillance system includes a remote monitoring station, at least one mobile radio (e.g. a handheld radio), and one or more deployable sensors each for unattended surveillance to transmit a detection signal in response to a detected activity. A deployable gateway surveillance node includes a controller and at least one wireless transceiver cooperating therewith to transmit a notification to the remote monitoring station based upon a received detection signal, and determine and transmit a voice-message status report, based upon the received detection signal, to the at least one mobile radio identifying the deployable gateway surveillance node and corresponding deployable sensor for the received detection signal.
