A diesel fuel pump module for use within a diesel fuel tank includes a reservoir defining a fuel storage volume. A jet pump having an inlet is positioned within the reservoir and configured to pump fuel from the tank into the reservoir. The module further includes an electric pump having an inlet and an outlet, and an air separation chamber connecting the electric pump outlet to the inlet of the jet pump.

Diesel fuel pump module

A fuel supply system includes a fuel pump configured to pump fuel from a first fuel storage location to an engine. A jet pump is configured to receive an auxiliary supply of fuel from the fuel pump and to return the auxiliary supply of fuel plus an additional flow of fuel drawn from a second fuel storage location to the first fuel storage location. A jet pump supply line has an inlet in fluid communication with an outlet of the fuel pump and has an outlet coupled to an inlet of the jet pump. A jet pump return line has an input coupled to an outlet of the jet pump and has an outlet adjacent to the fuel pump. A shut-off valve operates to selectively limit fuel flow through the jet pump return line.

Fuel supply system and method

A jet pump assembly includes a fuel supply conduit, a first jet pump integrally formed as a single piece with the fuel supply conduit and in fluid communication with the fuel supply conduit, a second jet pump integrally formed as a single piece with the fuel supply conduit and in fluid communication with the fuel supply conduit, and an inlet conduit integrally formed as a single piece with the second jet pump.

Jet pump assembly

A check valve includes a body defining a passageway through which fuel flows in a first fuel-flow direction during pump operation. The check valve also includes a seat, a seal member, and a biasing member biasing the seal member toward the seat. The seal member is movable between a first seated position in which the seal member is engaged with the seat and the pressure in the fuel rail is substantially equal to the operating pressure, and a second seated position in which the seal member is engaged with the seat and a residual pressure in the fuel rail is substantially less than the operating pressure. The seal member and the seat define a leak path between the fuel pump and the fuel rail permitting fuel to flow in a second fuel-flow direction opposite the first fuel-flow direction when the seal member is in the second seated position.

Fuel line check valve

A fuel pressure relief valve includes a body defining a passageway having an inlet end in communication with a fuel pump and an outlet end in communication with a fuel rail. The valve also includes a seal member moveable between a first position in which the seal member is seated against the outlet end, and a second position in which the seal member is unseated from the outlet end. The valve further includes a biasing member biasing the seal member toward the second position. The seal member moves from the second position to the first position immediately after fuel pump shutoff to maintain pressure in the fuel rail. The seal member moves from the first position to the second position when fuel in the fuel rail drops to a residual pressure substantially less than the operating pressure to provide a leak path between the fuel pump and the fuel rail.

Fuel pressure relief valve

A rotary fuel pump employs pressure balancing features on the non-vaned side of the impeller to provide localized application of fluid forces so that the impeller is more precisely balanced within the pumping chamber. A generally disc-shaped impeller body has an impeller with a body-side surface and a cover-side surface. The cover-side surface defines an impeller flow channel extending circumferentially around the impeller. The impeller includes a plurality of vanes positioned at least partially within the impeller flow channel. The body-side surface has a plurality of discontinuous undercut regions each coaxially aligned with at least a portion of the impeller flow channel. The impeller has a plurality of apertures wherein each aperture connects the impeller flow channel with a respective undercut region, whereby pressure forces against the impeller from the fuel are substantially balanced in the axial direction.

A fuel pump includes a housing, and a motor. A single sided impeller has first and second impeller flow channels each including a plurality of vanes. The impeller defines a flow passageway extending therethrough. A cover is attached to the housing and has a cover surface that defines first and second cover flow channels. The cover flow channels receive fuel from inlets formed in the cover. The first and second cover flow channels are aligned with the first and second impeller flow channels and receive fuel through the inlets and deliver fuel to outlets. A body is positioned within the housing and defines an impeller chamber to receive the impeller, and a first outlet passageway fluidically connected to the first cover flow channel and impeller flow channel. A second outlet passageway formed within the cover is fluidically connected to the second cover flow channel and impeller flow channel.

The present invention provides a system for controlling the speed of a motor by altering the magnetic field of the motor. The system includes field modification module, and a motor having field windings and a rotor. The field windings are configured to receive a driving signal that generates a magnetic field causing a rotation of the rotor. The field modification module is proximate the motor and alters the magnetic field in response to an input signal thereby controlling the speed and torque of the rotor.

A fuel pump is provided having improved efficiency by lowering the wet circle index of the pump while maintaining robust axial clearances to meet the demands of an automotive application. One embodiment includes a fuel pump for pressurizing fuel for delivery to an engine of a motor vehicle. The fuel pump generally comprises a housing, a motor, a single sided impeller, a cover and a body. The provision of a single sided impeller greatly reduces the wet circle index and improves the pump efficiency. The cover, impeller, and body are structured to axially balance the impeller which is free floating on the shaft of the motor.

A regenerative fuel pump comprising a housing, a pump cover having a first flow channel formed therein, a pump body having a second flow channel formed therein whereby the first flow channel and the second flow channel define a pumping chamber, and an impeller mounted between the pump cover and pump body and including a plurality of vanes spaced circumferentially about the impeller and defining a plurality of vane grooves. The vanes are spaced un-evenly in a non-repeating pattern about the impeller. The first and second flow channels each include an inlet end, an outlet end, and a stripper area defined as the area between the inlet end and the outlet end extending from the inlet end away from the flow channel. Each of the stripper areas including a plurality of grooves formed therein adapted to dampen pressure pulsations within the pumping chamber.

Low noise fuel pump design

A low deviation pressure relief valve for a fuel pump consisting of a housing having an elongated bore having a continuous wall, an axis, shoulders arranged on the wall so as to extend toward the axis. A ball in the housing has a diameter at least less than the diameter of the bore and a ball retainer located in the bore upstream from the shoulders forms a ball seat by pre-coining process. The ball is smaller than the retainer seat in diameter to ensure an edge seal with the ball. A spring coaxial with the axis located down stream from the ball retainer and supported on the shoulders, and the ball is located between the spring and the ball seat wherein low flow restriction is created and reduced pressure variation is created as fluid flows past the ball and less buckling in the spring is created by guide ribs.

An impeller for a fuel pump for supplying fuel to an automotive engine from a fuel tank includes an impeller body having a substantially disk shape with opposing first and second faces and an outer circumference. The impeller body defines a rotational axis extending therethrough perpendicular to the first and second faces. A plurality of radially outwardly extending vanes extend from the outer circumference of the impeller body and are spaced circumferentially about the impeller body. Each of the vanes includes a first half extending from the outer circumference adjacent the first face and a second half extending from the outer circumference adjacent the second face. The second halves are rotationally shifted about the rotational axis relative to the first halves. The vanes are spaced un-evenly and in a non-repeating pattern about the outer circumference of the impeller body.

A vehicle regenerative-type fuel pump which reduces the possible accumulation and effects of contamination relative to impellers with outer ring members. The outlet port on the pump cover member is enlarged and the C-shaped grove is positioned radially outwardly, which causes an increased outlet area and fluid flow around and through the impeller and through the outlet port.

An electric-operated fuel pump has a vaned impeller that is disposed within a pumping chamber for rotation about an axis. The pumping chamber has a main channel extending arcuately about the axis to one axial side of the impeller. The main channel has a radially outer margin that opens along at least a portion of the channel's arcuate extent to an adjoining contaminant collection channel which extends arcuately about the axis and which is effective, as the pumping element rotates, to collect certain fluid-entrained particulates expelled from the main channel and to convey such collected particulates toward the pump outlet. A sump is disposed at the end of the contaminant collection channel proximate the outlet. Several grooves in the seal surface between inlet and outlet, which is called &ldquo;strip area.&rdquo; The grooves are extended radially outward, the angles match the impeller vane angles and these grooves prevent leakage of the contaminations.

A vehicle regenerative-type fuel pump which reduces the possible accumulation and effects of contamination relative to impellers with outer ring members. The outer ring members have non-uniform configurations (slanted, curved, grooved, etc.) which reduce the affects of contamination which can cause wear and roughing of the outer surface resulting in higher torque and reduced pump efficiencies.
