A continuous bulk polymerization and esterification process includes continuously charging into a reaction zone at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer and at least one linear or branched chain alkanol having greater than 11 carbon atoms. The process includes maintaining a flow rate through the reaction zone sufficient to provide an average residence time of less than 60 minutes and maintaining a temperature in the reaction zone sufficient to produce a polymeric product incorporating at least some of the alkanol as an ester of the polymerized ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer. The polymeric product is used in various processes to produce water-based compositions including emulsions and dispersions such as oil emulsions, wax dispersions, pigment dispersions, surfactants and coatings which contain the polymeric product. A polymeric surfactant includes at least one ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer which has been radically incorporated into the polymeric surfactant and at least one ester of the incorporated ethylenically unsaturated acid-functional monomer which has a linear or branched chain alkyl group with greater than 11 carbon atoms. The molar critical micelle concentration of the polymeric surfactant is less than 1.0&#xd7;10moles/liter. Aqueous 2 percent solutions of certain polymeric surfactants have a surface tension of less than 45 mN/m at 30&#xb0; C. and exhibit a decrease in surface tension of at least 5 mN/m as the temperature warms from 30&#xb0; C. to 50&#xb0; C.

Continuous bulk polymerization and esterification process

Disclosed herein are starch stabilized polymeric emulsions. Persulfate salts degrade starch to give it suitable characteristics, and then also, essentially simultaneously, initiate polymerization with monomers. This permits a single reaction condition to be used for both the degradation step and the polymerization step, and avoids the need for use of metallic ions such as iron.

Starch degradation/graft polymerization composition, process, and uses

Hot melt wax compositions are described that render fibrous products such as paper, paperboard and corrugated paper containers water-resistant at room temperature, but enable such articles to be repulped and recycled when the coated articles are repulped in a heated nearly neutral to alkaline aqueous medium. The compositions comprise from about 20% to 97.5% by weight of a water-repellent wax that is a solid at 20.degree. C.; from about 2.5% to 50% by weight of an addition polymer of from about 50 to 95 mole percent of an ethylene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and from about 5 to 50 mole percent of at least one additional ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of 1-alkenes having from about 4 to 60 carbon atoms wherein the polymer is dispersible in the water-repellent wax; optionally from about 1 to 90 mole percent of the carboxyl groups in the polymer may be further modified by reaction with a substituted or unsubstituted monoalcohol or monoamine; and optionally, from about 5% to 75% by weight of at least one fatty acid selected from the group consisting of fatty acids containing from about 12 to 48 carbon atoms. The compositions are solid at 20.degree. C., but start to become fluid between about 50.degree. C. to 95.degree. C.

Repulpable hot melt polymer/wax compositions for fibrous products

Hot melt polymer/fatty acid compositions are described that render fibrous products such as paper, paperboard and corrugated paper containers water-resistant at room temperature, but enable such articles to be repulped and recycled when the coated articles are repulped in a heated nearly neutral to alkaline pH aqueous medium. The compositions comprise from about 5% to 50% by weight of an addition polymer of from about 5 to 95 mole percent of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or 50 to 95 mole percent of an ethylene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and the balance to a total of 100 mole percent of at least one additional ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of 1-alkenes having from about 4 to 60 carbon atoms; alkyl vinyl ethers having an ether alkyl, group of from about 8 to 60 carbon atoms, and alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates having an alkyl group of from about 8 to 60 carbon atoms; optionally from about 1 to 90 mole percent of the carboxyl groups in the polymer may be further modified by reaction with a substituted or unsubstituted monoalcohol or monoamine; and from about 50% to 95% by weight of at least one fatty acid selected from the group consisting of natural or synthetic fatty acids containing from about 12 to 48 carbon atoms, wherein the fatty acid is compatible with the polymer and the composition is a solid at 20.degree. C., but starts to become fluid between about 50.degree. C. to 95.degree. C.

The compositions comprise from about 5% to 50% by weight of an addition polymer of from about 5 to 95 mole percent of an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or 50 to 95 mole percent of an ethylene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and the balance to a total of 100 mole percent of at least one additional ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of 1-alkenes having from about 4 to 60 carbon atoms; alkyl vinyl ethers having an ether alkyl group of from about 8 to 60 carbon atoms, and alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates having an alkyl group of from about 8 to 60 carbon atoms; optionally from about 1 to 90 mole percent of the carboxyl groups in the polymer may be further modified by reaction with a substituted or unsubstituted monoalcohol or monoamine; and from about 50% to 95% by weight of at least one fatty acid selected from the group consisting of natural or synthetic fatty acids containing from about 12 to 48 carbon atoms, wherein the fatty acid is compatible with the polymer and the composition is a solid at 20.degree. C., but starts to become fluid between about 50.degree. C. to 95.degree. C.

A non-homogenized oil-in-water, essentially wax free emulsion cleaner polisher composition that resists phase separation. The composition comprises from about 75 to 99% water, 0.5 to 12% film former, 0.1 to 5% nonionic emulsifier and 0.01 to 0.3% thickener. The composition may be dispensed from pump, trigger or squeeze sprayers. Various methods are also disclosed to formulate the composition.

Non-homogenized multi-surface polish compositions

A surface-treating water-in-oil emulsion composition, which is essentially wax-free, comprising water, hydrocarbon solvent, film-former, nonionic emulsifier and an alpha-olefin/maleic anhydride polymer.
