A surgical tool driver has a driven end connectable to a rotary drive source and a driving end connectable to a surgical tool. A shaft assembly there between includes a hollow outer shaft and a flexible drive shaft for transmitting rotary power from the driven end to the driving end. The shaft assemble is curved for bypassing anatomical features in a patient.

Curved surgical tool driver

An orthopaedic reamer for cutting bone includes a rotatable shaft and a cutting head coupled with the shaft. The cutting head includes a distal face with a radius and a plurality of cutting teeth. Each cutting tooth includes a pair of opposed side walls extending from the distal face and a cutting edge extending between the side walls. Each cutting edge includes at least three adjoining segments. Each segment has a radius which is less than the radius of the distal face.

Orthopaedic rotary reamer with implant compliant cutting teeth

A patellar milling clamp is provided with a depth control for limiting and controlling the milling depth of a grater rotated against a bone secured in the milling clamp. A stop ring is provided on a shaft of the milling tool. The shaft is slidable in a guide bushing of the milling clamp, and a rotatable cap on the guide bushing is selectively engaged in notches in the guide bushing to provide an abutment surface at selectively different elevations. Further advancement of the tool is prevented when the stop ring abuts the abutment surface of the cap. The depth of milling is precisely controlled regardless of the original thickness of the patellar bone being milled.

Patellar milling clamp

A tool driver including a shaft having a longitudinal axis and opposite ends. A first partial boss is located at one of the shaft ends, a tool collet at the other of these shaft ends, and a second partial boss having a bore extending therethrough. The second partial boss being positioned on the shaft with the shaft in the bore. There is a stop on the shaft. The second partial boss is slidable on the shaft between the first partial boss and the stop. A spring is positioned between the second partial boss and the stop. The spring urges the second partial boss into engagement with the first partial boss. The first and second partial bosses are complementary to each other and are in engagement with each other defining a bayonet type latch mechanism. The latch mechanism has an axially extending inwardly tapered bore extending from one end coaxially of the shaft into the first and second bosses. The tapered bore being adapted to receive a coaxially located disc of a tool and to be connected to the tool driver within the tapered bore. The tapered bore and the tool disc coaxially centering the tool on the axis of the tool driver.

Tool driver

A new and improved reamer having a plurality of openings therein. Each of the openings have a periphery and a cutting edge selected from the periphery. Each of the cutting edges are bound by opposite portions of the periphery. The opposite portions are extended past the cutting edge in a direction opposite of the direction transverse of the cutting edge whereby the cutting edge may be shaped as desired independently of the shape of the periphery.

Acetabular reamer cup and method of producing the same

A tool driver having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and opposite ends. A boss is secured at one of the shaft ends by which the tool driver is connected to a rotary tool. A tool collate is secured to the other of the shaft ends by which the tool driver may be driven by a surfical hand piece having a chuck in which the collate may be positioned. The boss is equipped with a securing device of the bayonet type having a latch mechanism which holds the rotary tool on the boss coaxially of the driver during use. The securing device has a tapered bore extending from the distal end of the boss axially of the shaft. The rotary tool has a diametral bar extending across a bottom tool driver opening with a centrally located circular disk therein. The disk of the rotary tool fits within the bore of the tool shaft boss so as to concentrically locate the rotary tool and the tool shaft on the same axis. The latch mechanism holds the tool driver and the tool together in this position, whereby rotary tools of a multitude of sizes can be secured concentrically to the tool shaft without holding a plurality of critical tolerances when machining the bayonet type securing device or the rotary tool bottom bar.

An instrument for preparing a human patella for implanting a patellar prosthesis. A support member includes a quick-release base member mounted adjacent a first end of the support member. A reamer member is removably mounted on the quick-release base member. An attachment release member is resiliently mounted on the support member for movement into and out of engagement with the quick-release member and the reamer member. A stop member is adjustably mounted for limited movement on the support member to a plurality of calibrated positions for setting a controlled depth for movement of the reamer member.

Patella reaming system

In the broader aspects of the invention, there is provided a new and improved tool driver having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and opposite ends and tools therefor. A boss is secured at one of said shaft ends by which the tool driver is connected to a rotary tool. A tool collate is secured at the other of the shaft ends by which the tool driver may be driven by a surgical hand piece having a chuck in which the collate may be positioned. The boss has a surface which engages the tool and positions the tool exactly coaxially of the tool driver. A latch mechanism is provided to hold the rotary tool on the boss, whereby the rotary tool is held exactly coaxially of the driver during use. The rotary tool which is used with the driver has a bottom tool driver opening which has the same dimensions as the boss of the tool driver of the invention. The boss thus fills the opening and the opening is complementary to the boss. The boss of the tool driver and the bottom tool driver opening of the tool are both positioned precisely coaxial of the axis of the tool and the longitudinal axis of the tool driver about which the cutting edges are precisely positioned and rotated.

Tool driver and tools therefor

A method for making an acetabular reamer for an acetabular reamer comprising the steps of: fabricating a bowl shaped cup-blank having outer and inner bowl shaped surfaces, perforating a plurality of holes through the cup-blank, the holes each are surrounded by a curved margin, deforming outwardly of the outer surface a cutting portion of the margin of each of the holes, thereby forming cutting edges, the cutting portions are curved outwardly of the outer surface, the cutting edges are curved tangentially of the outer surface and disposed to cut upon rotation of the acetabular reamer.

A new and improved tool driver having a shaft with a longitudinal axis and opposite ends. A boss is secured at one of said shaft ends by which the tool driver is connected to a rotary tool. A tool collate is secured at the other of the shaft ends by which the tool driver may be driven by a surgical hand piece having a chuck in which the collate may be positioned. The boss has a distal end surface with a groove therein. Both the groove and the distal end surface extend transversely of the axis. A pin is positioned in the groove on the axis. A latch mechanism is provided to hold a mounting bar of a rotary tool in the groove on the pin, whereby the rotary tool is held exactly coaxially of the driver during use. The rotary tool which is used with the driver has a bar which has the same dimensions as the groove in the boss of the tool driver of the invention. The bar thus fills the slot and is complementary to the slot. The bar has a hole therein which is complementary to the pin. The pin extends coaxially of the shaft and the boss. The bar hole in which the pin of the tool driver is positioned is precisely coaxial of the axis of the tool about which the cutting edges are precisely positioned.

A tool driver comprising a shaft having a longitudinal axis and opposite ends. A tool base is secured to the shaft at one of the ends. A plurality of tool engaging arms extend generally radially outwardly of the tool base and the shaft. The arms are moveable radially outwardly of the shaft between a tool engaging position and a retracted position. An arm actuator is positioned on the shaft to retract and extend the arms. The other end of the shaft is shaped so as to be engageable with the chuck or collet of a tool driver.

A method for making an acetabular reamer for an acetabular reamer comprising the steps of: fabricating a bowl shaped cup-blank having outer and inner bowl shaped surfaces, perforating a plurality of holes through the cup-blank, the holes each are surrounded by a curved margin, deforming outwardly of the outer surface a cutting portion of the margin of each of the holes, thereby forming cutting edges, the cutting portions are curved outwardly of the outer surface, the cutting edges are curved tangentially of the outer surface and disposed to cut upon rotation of the acetabular reamer. An acetabular reamer cup is also provided comprising a cutting bowl having a plurality of curved cutting edges, the cutting bowl has a plurality of openings preceding the cutting edges, the cutting bowl has a generally conical rise following the cutting edges, the cutting edges are spirally arranged about the axis of rotation of the cutting bowl, and a bottom adjoined to the cutting bowl, the bottom has a tool driver opening coaxial with the cutting bowl and the cutting edges.

A disposable cutter which has a plurality of cutting edges. The cutter has perforations adjoining the cutting edges. The cutter defines an axis of rotation. The cutter is joined to a transparent bowl. The bowl is concentric with the axis of rotation. The bowl has a bottom tool driver opening concentric with the axis of rotation.

Disposable surgical cutters

A shielded universal joint having a pivot head defining a primary axis. The pivot head has a ball and a neck. The ball has a longitudinal slot. The slot has a throat at the center of the ball. The imperfect socket head is provided having a socket and a pin. The socket defines a secondary axis. The socket has a cavity concentric with the secondary axis. The cavity closely receives the ball. The socket has a continuous margin. The pin is joined to the socket in spaced relation to the margin. The pin extends through the passage. The pin defines a first pivot axis extending longitudinally through the pin. The pin and the throat define a second pivot axis extending through the throat and the pin perpendicularly to the first pivot axis. The socket head is simultaneously pivotal relative to the ball about both of the pivot axes.
