A plasma torch electrode has a copper outer shell on an inner portion of which is provided a more durable composition of a silver alloy by pressing or casting to achieve longer lifetime under arcing conditions in air or oxygen while minimizing the cost of materials and fabrication.

Plasma torch with extended life electrodes

A safe and effected method of starting up operating and shutting down a plasma fired cupola. The starting up and shutting down procedures incorporated interlocks and warning signals that insure the safety of the operators and equipment and the controls utilize the temperature of the iron in the spout as a focal point to control the torch output by separately changing field current, arc current, and torch air supply, to compensate for changes in charge make-up, particulate feed, percentage of shroud air to shroud recirculating gases to produce different irons at various melt rates.

Control of a plasma fired cupola

A process for the production of magnetic spheres from grit of magnetite ore by introducing the grit into an arc heated gas jet, thus heating the grit to a temperature of at least 1600.degree. C, and allowing the melted magnetite droplets to spheroidize and cool to a solid state.
