A gas-flushed microwavable easy-to-open food package is provided which is resistant to impact under temperatures at or below freezing and which is comprised of a flexible lidding film having oxygen-barrier properties hermetically and peelably sealed to a food compartment formed from a polypropylene copolymer material. The lidding film is preferably comprised of oriented polyester, and the food product compartment further comprises a peelable oxygen, barrier film, preferably formed of ethylene vinyl acetate, PVDC and a peelable polyethylene layer. The package is designed to contain a perishable food product, such as a wiener in a bun or other proteinaceous-farinaceous food combinations, and is preferably entirely or partially transparent so as to allow the consumer to readily observe the condition of the food product before purchase. The package is particularly advantageous in that it provides impact protection and maintains freshness for a food product that is shipped frozen and kept at refrigeration temperatures near point of sale, and can also be microwaved to serving temperatures without thermal distortion.

A food package container including a base and a body in alignment with and peelably sealed to each other is provided. At least one of snap closure assembly is provided on the respective peripheral flanges of the base and body, and this snap closure assembly provides an audible snapping signal when the consumer recloses the food packaging container. The closure assembly includes an insertion projection and an opening in general registry therewith which is undersized with respect to the projection.

Reclosable food packaging having snap closure and method of making same

A package is provided for enclosing a proteinaceous product under vacuumized and hermetically sealed conditions. The package has a peelable hermetic reclosure and a body member of semi-rigid preformed plastic with a first planar marginal portion and a central portion shaped to provide a packaging chamber. The package also has a flexible dimensionally stable base member having a corresponding second planar marginal portion and a central portion to provide a closure for said packaging chamber. The two planar marginal portions are adhered together face-to-face by an adhesive to provide at least a portion of the hermetic seal wherein said adhesive is a high molecular weight pressure sensitive hot-melt adhesive having a viscosity of between about 5,000 and about 100,000 centipoise at 300.degree. F. and said adhesive provides a peelable hermetic reclosure. Curling and wrinkling of the flexible base member are precluded by utilizing a flexible base member that is a film component, preferably a polyolefin film component, which has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is equal to or greater than that of the semi-rigid preformed plastic body member.

A package of the type having a tray with recessed compartments for receiving food products or the like, the tray being covered by a thin flexible and preferably transparent film which seals the products in their respective compartments. The outer enclosure is formed by a stiff collar which completely encircles the tray with the sides of the collar turned downwardly and inwardly to provide frictional and resilient engagement of the collar with the sides of the tray. The collar also includes a stiff support flap which enables it to stand on end.

A continuous method of enclosing a proteinaceous product in a vacuumized and hermetically sealed package having a peelable hermetic reclosure and having a body member of semi-rigid preformed plastic with a first planar marginal portion and a central portion shaped to provide a packaging chamber. The package also has a flexible dimensionally stable base member having a corresponding second planar marginal portion and a central portion to provide a closure for said packaging chamber. The method requires placing a sufficient quantity of proteinaceous product in the central portion of the body member to substantially fill the central portion when the package is completed, positioning the first planar marginal portion face-to-face to the corresponding second planar marginal portion, vacuumizing the assembly, and hermetically sealing the package. The improvement is applying an adhesive to either the first planar marginal portion to provide at least a portion of the hermetic seal wherein said adhesive is a high molecular weight pressure sensitive hot melt adhesive having a viscosity of between 5,000 to 100,000 centipoise at 300.degree. F. and said adhesive provides a peelable hermetic reclosure.

A laminated film for packaging use which film has at least one lamina of a crystalline flexible polyvinylidene chloride film adhered to a lamina of chlorinated polyethylene film, the chlorinated polyethylene film having a chlorine of concentration of up to approximately 60%, by weight, with the particular chlorine concentration of from 30% to 50%, by weight, being preferred. The laminated film being formed by contacting a polyvinylidene chloride film while in a supercooled noncrystalline state with a chlorinated ethylene film and thereafter effecting crystallization of the polyvinylidene chloride film with substantially random crystal distribution throughout, such as, by heating the thus formed laminate to the crystallization temperature of the polyvinylidene chloride.
