Distributed fiber optic monitoring of vibration within a region of interest includes acquiring distributed vibration data from optical backscatter generated in response to an interrogating pulse of optical energy launched into an optical fiber deployed in a region of interest having a fluid flow, and generating a noise log from the distributed vibration data that includes a plurality of traces representing vibration energy above or below selected frequencies at a plurality of locations in the region of interest. Characteristics of the fluid flow in the region of interest are then determined based on the noise log.

A technique facilitates monitoring of flow conditions with respect to flow through a tubing. A distributed sensor is routed along an interior of the tubing to monitor flow conditions. For example, the distributed sensor may be routed over a length of the tubing having a lateral opening. Fluid is flowed along the distributed sensor and within the interior of the tubing. The distributed sensor is operated to measure strain which results from flow of the fluid along the distributed sensor. The strain may then be evaluated to determine a change in a flow condition, such as a change in a flow condition related to the lateral opening.

A method for calibrating a distributed vibration sensing system includes applying a localized calibration event, such as a temperature change, to at least one location along an optical fiber cable. Backscattered light generated the optical fiber while the localized calibration event is applied includes phase information having low frequency components. The center of energy of the low frequency components can be identified in order to generate a reference point along the fiber that can be used to generate a channel-depth calibration scale that can be applied to vibration data acquired from the fiber when used in various applications, such as borehole seismic surveying.
