This disclosure relates to tool string embodiments, system embodiments, and method embodiments for testing and/or sampling a formation in an open hole hydrocarbon well, for example in order to determine whether the well merits production. Disclosed embodiments can be concerned with minimizing hydrocarbon emissions during testing, for example to provide a greener testing approach. Thus, improvements to reservoir testing a hydrocarbon well are disclosed.

Low emission multi-zone hydrocarbon reservoir testing

A shifting tool including a flow sleeve having a fluidic diode to facilitate flow from an exterior port to an interior port along the flow sleeve and restrict flow in the opposite direction. In a first configuration of the shifting tool, a flow path extends from the exterior of a case, via the exterior port, along the flow sleeve, and, via the interior port, to a flow bore of an operating mandrel. Upon exposure to a pressure differential between a cavity in which the flow sleeve is positioned and the flow bore above a threshold pressure differential, a shear pin breaks, such that the shifting tool assumes the second configuration. In the second configuration, the operating mandrel has shifted longitudinally whereby a snap ring extends into a recess or groove in an outside surface of the operating mandrel, to hold the operating mandrel in the second configuration.

Fluidic diode operated autofill valve

A perforating gun assembly for use within a borehole. The perforating gun assembly may include a first perforating charge section, a second perforating charge section, and a tandem coupling the first perforating charge section to the second perforating charge section. The tandem may include a first sensor package that may be operable to determine a flowrate of formation fluid flowing around the tandem and a second sensor package that may be operable to identify the formation fluid.

Perforating gun assembly for use within a borehole

A downhole tool activation assembly for prevention of activation from rig heave on a floating rig comprising a block release with a release feature. The release feature includes a release chamber, an activation chamber, and a fluid stop that retains a traveling block in a first position. A traveling block comprised of a plurality of drag blocks and drag block springs is configured to retain the traveling block to a position along an inner surface of a casing. The block release moves to a release position when the release feature is activated. The traveling block moves axially along a block mandrel with a block lug traveling within a j-slot. The j-slot on the block mandrel includes a run-in slot, a motion slot, and an activating slot configured to transfer the block lug to the next slot. The activating slot is configured to move the traveling block to an activating position.

Downhole interventionless depth correlation

A downhole tester valve disposed below an isolation member in a test string may facilitate a shut-in drill stem test procedure. The positioning of the tester valve allows the tester valve to remain in a static location when the test string above the isolation member expands or contracts. The volume of a wellbore interval below the isolation member may remain constant and pressure readings over the duration of a shut-in DST test period may effectively be monitored. The tester valve is operatively associated with a communication unit that permits selective activation of the tester valve from across the isolation member, and in some example embodiments, an actuator for operating the tester valve is also is also operable to set the isolation member in the wellbore.

A downhole well device for positioning within a well having a fluid, comprising an outer casing comprising a port, an inner casing at least partially located within the outer casing, seals between the inner casing and the outer casing, a rupture disk located in the port, a substance located in a space between the rupture disk and the inner casing, wherein the substance is exothermically reactive with the fluid, and a sensor configured to detect an exothermic reaction within the chamber.

Downhole tool with assembly for determining seal integrity

A well tool can include a resizable element that is longitudinally expandable and contractible. The well tool can include a first acoustic sensor unit positioned at a first longitudinal end of the resizable element for receiving a first wireless acoustic signal, waiting for a predefined period of time, and transmitting a second wireless acoustic signal after the predefined period of time has elapsed. The well tool can include a second acoustic sensor unit positioned at a second longitudinal end of the resizable element for transmitting the first wireless acoustic signal at a first time, and receiving the second wireless acoustic signal at a second time. The second acoustic sensor unit can also be positioned for determining a time delay between the first time and the second time, and determining a distance between the first acoustic sensor unit and the second acoustic sensor unit based on the time delay.

Measuring lengths of resizable elements downhole

In one embodiment of this disclosure there is provided a method for communicating with a second downhole tool in a wellbore that extends from a terranean surface. When there is no loss of communicability in a second communications medium between the terranean surface and the second downhole tool, the method comprises transmitting a first communication in the second communication medium from the terranean surface to the second downhole tool. When there is a loss of communicability in the second communications medium, the method comprises transmitting the first communication from the terranean surface to a first downhole tool positioned in the wellbore in a first communication medium different than the second communication medium, translating the first communication from the first to the second communication medium, and transmitting the first communication in the second communication medium from the first to the second downhole tool.

Communicating with a downhole tool

A downhole hanger assembly having a downhole hanger and a telemetry unit. The telemetry unit can reside within the downhole hanger or the telemetry unit can reside in a telemetry component which is coupled with the downhole hanger. The downhole hanger assembly can be lowered into a wellbore tubular and set against an interior wall of the wellbore tubular. The telemetry unit can receive and transmit data uphole and/or downhole. The data can be received from another telemetry unit and/or from a tool assembly, such as a sensor.

System and method for a downhole hanger assembly

A downhole valve system includes a downhole valve positionable in a wellbore and a downhole valve actuator coupled to the downhole valve. An annulus is defined between the downhole valve and the wellbore. The downhole valve actuator includes a pressure chamber that encloses a pressurized fluid at a particular pressure and a breakable member. The downhole valve actuator is adjustable to a first position to close the downhole valve when the particular pressure is greater than an annulus pressure at a first pressure in the annulus, and the downhole valve actuator is adjustable to a second position to lock the downhole valve in an open position independent of the relative values of the particular pressure and the annulus pressure, with the annulus pressure set at a second pressure greater than the first pressure to break the breakable member.

Maintaining a downhole valve in an open position

A downhole distributor valve includes a housing that includes a housing fluid port therethrough, a mandrel that defines a bore and is positioned radially within the housing, and a fluid chamber radially defined between the housing and the mandrel and configured to contain a fluid at a particular pressure. The mandrel includes a mandrel fluid port therethrough. The mandrel is moveable from a first position with the bore fluidly decoupled from the housing fluid port to a second position with the bore fluidly coupled with the housing fluid port through the mandrel fluid port. The mandrel is moveable based on a hydrostatic pressure in the bore greater than the particular pressure of the pressurized fluid.

Downhole fluid valve

A method of making a downhole servicing tool comprising explosively welding a corrosion resistant material to a corrodible surface of the downhole servicing tool to yield a coated surface, wherein the coated surface comprises an explosively-welded corrosion resistant material.

Wellbore servicing assemblies and methods of using the same

A position determination system and a method for position detection within a wellbore are disclosed. A radioactive tag may be disposed within the wellbore. One or more scintillating optical fibers may be longitudinally disposed along a drill string, wireline, or the like, and run into the wellbore. A detector system is coupled to the optical fiber(s). A scintillating optical fiber emits short, bright flashes of visible light whenever exposed to the gamma radiation. When a scintillating flash is measured, it may be determined that the optical fiber is located within proximity to the radioactive tag. The amplitude of received pulses may be used to estimate where in the optical fiber scintillating events are occurring. By providing a second optical fiber coupled to a scintillating optical fiber, a time delay between received pulses may be used to indicate where along the scintillating optical fiber scintillation events are occurring.

Distributed scintillation detector for downhole positioning

An assembly and method to repeatedly set and isolate multiple sections along a zone of interest in a single downhole trip is disclosed. The assembly includes an outer pipe and an inner pipe adapted to telescope along the outer pipe. After a first section of a zone of interest is isolated, the inner pipe may be telescoped up along the outer pipe, and then set to isolate a second section above the first section. This process may be repeated as desired to stimulate and/or test each desired section along a zone of interest. Once the inner pipe is completely telescoped inside the outer pipe, the inner pipe may be disconnected from the outer pipe via use of a disconnect assembly.
