Embodiments are directed to identifying an application, identifying a deployment environment for deploying the application, identifying a configuration manager, identifying a server type from a plurality of server types available for the application, identifying a configuration management node associated with the server type, defining an ordered set of instructions and/or resources for the configuration management node by selecting an instruction or resource from a list of instructions and recipes associated with the configuration management node, and storing the ordered set of instruction and/or resources for future deployment of the application in the configuration management node.

A resource management node includes a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory includes computer readable program code that when executed by the processor causes the processor to perform operations. The operations can include, for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs), determining operational resources of physical host machines available in a distributed computing system that are needed to provide the guest VM. A placement scenario for placing the guest VMs on the physical host machines and placing the physical host machines in cabinets of a distributed computing system is generated. An amount of infrastructure of the distributed computing system used by the placement scenario is determined. A determination is made whether the placement scenario satisfies a defined rule for how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system can be used. Placement of the physical host machines in the cabinets and placement of the guest VMs on the physical host machines is initiated based on the placement scenario satisfying the defined rule.

Deployment of virtual machines to physical host machines based on infrastructure utilization decisions

The operations can include identifying an unproductive group of guest virtual machines (VMs) that satisfy a defined rule for being unproductive on an first group of physical host machines based on infrastructure of a distributed computing system used by the first group of the physical host machines to host the guest VMs. A relocation scenario is generated for relocating the unproductive group of the guest VMs from the first group of the physical host machines to a second group of the physical host machines. An effect of the relocation scenario on infrastructure usage of the distributed computing system is estimated. The unproductive group of the guest VMs is relocated from the first group of the physical host machines to the second group of the physical host machines based on the relocation scenario.

Decommissioning physical host machines after relocating unproductive virtual machines therefrom

The operations include, for each of a plurality of guest virtual machines (VMs) of a VM cluster provided by computer operations of a physical machine among a plurality of physical machines within a distributed computing system, determining a productivity metric for the guest VM based on resources of the physical machine that are used by the guest VM. The operations further include for each of the guest VMs, determining, based on the productivity metric for the guest VM, an infrastructure value that indicates how much infrastructure of the distributed computing system is attributed to providing the guest VM.

Determining virtual machine utilization of distributed computed system infrastructure

A system and method for automatically reconfiguring a computing environment comprises a consumption analysis server, a placement server, a deployment server in communication with a set of virtual machine monitors and a data warehouse in communication with a set of data collection agents, and a database. The consumption analysis server operates on measured resource utilization data in the data warehouse to yield a set of resource consumptions, available capacities and host and virtual machine configurations from the computing environment. The deployment server continuously monitors an event triggering condition and when the triggering condition is met, the placement server assigns a set of target virtual machines to a target set of hosts in a new placement and the deployment server implements the new placement through communication with the set of virtual machine monitors. The placement server right-sizes the virtual machines and the target set of hosts.

System and method for continuous optimization of computing systems with automated assignment of virtual machines and physical machines to hosts

The placement server assigns a set of target virtual machines to the target set of hosts in a new placement that is right-sized according to a set of right-sizing constraints and rules. In one mode of operation the new placement is nearly optimal. In another mode of operation, the new placement is 'good enough' to achieve a threshold score based on an objective function of capacity headroom. The new placement is implemented in the computing environment.

The present invention realizes a number of business systems management functionalities, including defining event databases and means for event monitoring and correlating a customer's business functions by using an enterprise view focused on a system of applications, operating systems, connections, and physical components. The method comprises identifying the problem; preparing for an audit; performing the audit; reviewing the audit; developing an action plan; developing an execution plan; deploying a solution in accordance with the execution plan; monitoring the deployed solution; and recording lessons learned. Alternatively, the method may be applied to evaluate the capacity of a distributed processing business system to provide a prospective service. In this alternative embodiment, the method comprises identifying the problem; preparing for an audit; performing the audit; reviewing the audit; preparing a rating table; populating the rating table with results from the audit; calculating a service rating based upon the results entered in the rating table; and presenting the service rating to management.

A method for integrating the IT components which support a business process into a single end-to-end management platform is provided. The method comprises decomposing a business process into a set of enabling applications and then documenting the technology elements and support organizations which are necessary to execute those enabling applications. The required monitors for the business process enabling technology can be deployed which will allow the mapping of technology problems to business problem and the development of correlation rules. This information is then used to develop an end-to-end business process event management (or other system management disciplines such as performance management) platform, which can be integrated into any preexisting event management process. In one embodiment of the present invention, the event management platform can be constructed between several business entities.
