A receiver includes multi-user detection (MUD) functionality and a cognitive engine. The receiver may also be coupled to multiple antennas and have analog beamforming capability. The cognitive engine is operative for selecting a beam or beams associated with the multiple antennas to enable successful demodulation by the MUD. The receiver has application in multiple access channels and in other communication scenarios.

Method and apparatus for smart adaptive dynamic range multiuser detection radio receiver

Embodiments disclose an apparatus for enclosing and insulating an opening in a structure such as an air conditioning unit mounted in a sleeve. The apparatus includes one or more layers required depending on the distance which any equipment installed in the opening extends beyond the wall surface. An embodiment for a rectangular insulating cover apparatus includes corner pieces, horizontal wall pieces, and side wall pieces. Corner pieces are configured to allow the horizontal wall pieces and side wall pieces to be slid into the corner pieces. The depth of the insertion into the corner pieces can be varied depending on the desired dimensions for the insulating cover apparatus. After cutting the top cover the required dimensions for the opening in the insulating cover apparatus, top cover corner boots and C-channels are installed on the top cover which is then pressed into place. A method for assembling and installing the same is provided, as are other aspects.

Embodiments disclose an apparatus for enclosing and insulating an opening in a structure such as for an air conditioning unit or a sleeve. The apparatus includes a cover having a first section and a second section, wherein the first section is designed to be adjustable in relation to the second section; one or more insulating members positioned along an interior of the cover; two or more fasteners designed to secure the cover to an A/C unit sleeve or a structure. In another embodiment the apparatus cover is a single section and not adjustable. A method of installing the same is provided, as are other aspects.

A method is disclosed to detect a broad class of signals in Gaussian noise using higher order statistics. The method detects a number of different signal types. The signals may be in the base-band or the pass-band, single-carrier or multi-carrier, frequency hopping or non-hopping, broad-pulse or narrow-pulse etc. In a typical setting this method provides an error rate of 3% at a signal to noise ratio of 0 dB. This method gives the time frequency detection ratio which may be used to determine if the detected signal falls in Class Single-Carrier of Class Multi-Carrier. Additionally, this method may be used for a number of different applications such as multiple signal identification, finding the basis functions of the received signal.

A system and method combine multiple data streams in an efficient and optimal manner, based on new techniques, to determine range, relative angle and velocity with respect to a point of reference. Embodiments of the present invention take advantage of the multiple data streams to provide improved performance when the data is contaminated with environmental and system noise. An improved system is provided for aiming a shotgun-based or other countermeasure system so as to be able to countermeasure incoming rockets or projectiles. In one embodiment a shotgun aimed and controlled by the subject system projects a pattern of pellets to intercept a rocket-propelled grenade or incoming projectile. The fire control system uses a CW two-tone monopulse radar to derive range and angle of arrival within 150 milliseconds, with range and angle of arrival measurements having approximately twice the accuracy of prior CW two-tone monopulse radars. The improvement derives from using all of the information in the returned radar beams and is the result of the recognition that one can use the Sum and Difference signals to assemble a two-by-two Rank One matrix that permits using singular value decomposition techniques to generate range and angle of arrival matrices in which all available information is used and in which noise is eliminated.

A method and apparatus is provided for correcting the phase difference estimate derived from a two-tone CW radar to correct velocity-induced range estimate phase errors by offsetting the phase difference estimate with a phase correction equal to either of the Doppler frequencies associated with returns from an object multiplied by the time interval between the samplings of the returned waveforms. The correction effectively eliminates the velocity-induced slippage between the phases of the retuned waveforms so that a comparison between the phases of the waveforms can be made to reduce or substantially eliminate range estimate bias.

Techniques for determining the angles of arrival of multiple simultaneous cochannel sources using only a single RF receiver sampling and downconversion channel is disclosed. This is accomplished by sequentially forming several known mixtures of multiple antenna signals in the RF domain prior to downconversion and digitization. Angle of arrival information is then recovered through the application of higher order statistics and subspace fitting techniques. The same principles can be applied to other P-element receiver arrays (e.g., acoustical receiver array).

A method of channel encoding and channel decoding in a multiple access communication system wherein the channel decoding requirements increase linearly and not exponentially as the number of users increase. A channel encoder converts alphabetic symbols into a preselected geometric representation of a hexagonal lattice known as a symbol constellation. A channel decoder converts the received symbol constellation into a replication of the alphabetic symbols. Each user has a specially defined symbol set that allows the linear-complexity decoding operation.
