Probe assembly includes an ultrasound probe and a cable assembly configured to communicatively couple the ultrasound probe to a control system and transmit signals therethrough. The cable assembly includes a cable jacket surrounding a channel of the cable assembly. The cable assembly also includes a plurality of wire pairs extending through the channel. The channel being sized and shaped to permit the wire pairs to move relative to one another within the channel when the probe assembly is moved. The wire pairs and the channel are configured to have a designated pack ratio (Area/Area). The Areaincludes a collective cross-sectional area of the wire pairs, and the Areais equal to a cross-sectional area of the channel.

A cable () includes a center conductor (). An insulating material in the form of a layer () surrounds the center conductor. A sparse shield () partially surrounds the insulating material. The sparse shield may include a plurality of conductors, which are grouped adjacent to one another within a space around the insulating layer that has a length that is less than 25% of the total circumference of the insulating layer. An insulating jacket () covers the sparse shield and the remainder of the cable. The cable may be used in a cable assembly ().

A cable assembly includes a cable having a core surrounded by a sheath. A cone element has an interior bore receiving the cable core, and has a tapered exterior surface. At least a portion of the cone is received within the cable sheath. A cup has a tapered bore receiving the sheath and the core. A portion of the sheath is captured between the exterior of the cone and the interior of the cup bore. Tension applied to the cable with respect to cup generates compression of the sheath between the cone and cup, and tension is thus transmitted by the sheath without application of radial force to the core. The sheath may include a strength member such as a braided metal wrap, and an elastic jacket, so that the wrap bears the tension, and the jacket returns the sheath to its normal length upon cessation of tension.

The traces (8) may include test pads (13) in registration with windows (19) in the carrier (2).

A connector for electrically and mechanically interconnecting multiple pairs of small coaxial conductor pairs includes a shield bus layer and signal conductor traces on opposite sides of a flexible dielectric substrate. Terminal portions of the signal conductor traces span an opening through the connector giving access to each signal conductor trace for soldering the traces to arrayed terminals on a circuit assembly, and are located accurately, so that mass soldering techniques can be utilized, with the connector located with respect to the circuit assembly by registration pins and holes. Portions of the shield bus are exposed to be soldered to a respective terminal on a circuit assembly, and to allow the shield conductors of the coaxial pairs to be soldered to the shield bus layer. Thermal breaks are defined in the shield bus layer to protect soldered junctions between the signal conductor traces and the signal conductors of coaxial pairs and the terminals of the circuit assembly. Solder verification holes are provided in the shield bus terminal zone to verify adequate, suitable, satisfactory connection.
