Hybrid sol-gel barrier coatings are produced by hydrolyzing a tetrafunctional alkoxide silicate and a silane having one or two pendant crosslinkable groups in water or water plus a water miscible organic solvent and a catalytic amount a protic acid, Lewis acid, or metal chelate, until a viscosity of from about 2,600 to about 3,200 cps is obtained. The product is then diluted water or water plus a water miscible organic solvent, optionally containing a protic acid, Lewis acid, or metal chelate, until a viscosity of about 0.5 to about 10 cps is obtained. The diluted product is blended with a photoinitiator, coated onto a substrate, dried and irradiated to obtain oxygen barrier films having a very low oxygen transmission rate.

Hybrid sol-gel barrier coatings

The invention provides a process for producing an improved barrier laminate structure composed of an oxygen barrier silicone coating on a paper or paperboard substrate. The process comprises hydrolyzing a silane formulation with water to form a corresponding silanol. A photoinitiator is added to the silanol to form an ultraviolet sensitive formulation. The formulation is coated onto a paper or paperboard substrate and allowed to dry. Once dryed, the formulation is exposed to ultraviolet radiation to form a cured formulation.

Process for producing an improved oxygen barrier structure on paper

Preformed cellulosic linerboard as utilized in the manufacture of corrugated products is provided with enhanced crush strength by a combined lignin-coating and calendering treatment. The linerboard is coated with an aqueous lignin-containing solution and then, with the coating in a wet or dry state, subjected to at least one pass through a calender nip to substantially increase the CD crush strength of the treated linerboard over the CD crush strength of an untreated linerboard or a lignin treated but uncalendered linerboard. The linerboard may be laminated with a substantially air and moisture impervious sheet to inhibit bleeding of the lignin coating in high humidity conditions.
