Novel damping compositions

This invention relates to an environmentally durable composition which has excellent low temperature dynamic properties. The composition comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of 100 parts by weight elastomer having a fully saturated backbone, curing agent for the elastomer in amounts sufficient to crosslink the elastomer, reinforcing particulate filler, at least 20 parts by weight of an aliphatic oil and paraffinic oil and/or naphthenic oil. Inclusion of the naphthenic oil and/or paraffinic oil with the aliphatic oil improves the overall properties and processability of the elastomer composition. Particulate graphite may be incorporated into the composition to lower its friction.

This invention relates to an environmentally durable composition which has superior low temperature dynamic properties. The composition comprises a substantially homogeneous mixture of 100 parts by weight elastomer having a fully saturated backbone, curing agent for the elastomer in amounts sufficient to crosslink the elastomer, reinforcing particulate filler, at least 20 parts by weight of particularly defined polyalphaolefin oil and, preferably, particularly defined paraffinic oil and/or naphthenic oil. Inclusion of the polyalphaolefin oil in the composition improves the low temperature dynamic properties and processability of the elastomer, which are further improved by inclusion of naphthenic oil and/or paraffinic oil therein. Particulate graphite may be incorporated into the composition to lower its friction.

This invention relates to an environmentally durable composition which has excellent low temperature dynamic properties. A soft, fatigue resistant vulcanizate adapted for transmitting load between moving mechanical parts comprising (a) 100 parts by weight of crosslinked elastomer, (b) a fatigue life enhancing amount of substantially internally saturated, substantially linear polymer that (i) is made from monomers consisting essentially of isobutylene, (ii) is a strain crystallizable, elastic solid at 20.degree. C. and (iii) has a viscosity average molecular weight (Flory) above about 1.3 million, (c) about 5-200 parts by weight particulate comprising carbon black, said elastomer being crosslinked with (d) curative in an amount sufficient to crosslink said elastomer, wherein said polymer of (b) is dispersed throughout said elastomer of (a) in a discrete microscopic phase.

Soft, fatigue resistant elastomer articles

This invention relates to the use of particular urethane or urethane/sulfur cured acrylonitrile-butadiene elastomers in systems wherein a vulcanizate component with resistance to oxidized (sour) hydrocarbon fuel is desired, that is in systems wherein a vulcanizate functions in contact with hydrocarbon fuel having oxidation products therein. The vulcanizate composition consists essentially of the reaction produces of (i) 100 parts by weight of an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer and (ii) a curative comprising 1-10 parts by weight of a urethane curing agent, wherein the urethane curing agent is the reaction product of a nitrosophenol and a diisocyanate. The curative may additionally comprise sulfur.

Use of urethane cured nitrile elastomer as oxidized fuel resistant

A soft, heat and fatigue resistant vulcanizate adapted for transmitting load between moving mechanical parts comprising (a) 100 parts by weight of crosslinked elastomer consisting essentially of (i) natural or synthetic polyisoprene rubber, and (ii) elastomeric polybutadiene made from monomers consisting essentially of butadiene at a weight ratio of (i) to (ii) of about 1:10 to 10:1, (b) about 10-75 parts by weight of substantially internally saturated, substantially linear polymer that (i) is made from monomers consisting essentially of isobutylene, (ii) is a strain crystallizable, elastic solid at 20.degree. C. and (iii) has a viscosity average molecular weight (Flory) above about 1.3 million, (c) said elastomer being crosslinked with a curative comprising a curing agent selected from the group consisting of (i) a sufficient amount of sulfur to provide an efficient or semi-efficient vulcanization of said crosslinkable elastomer, (ii) isocyanate or blocked isocyanate in an amount sufficient to crosslink said crosslinkable elastomer and (iii) isocyanate or blocked isocyanate and sulfur in amounts sufficient to crosslink said crosslinkable elastomer and (d) 5-200 parts by weight particulate comprising carbon black, wherein said polymer of (b) is dispersed throughout said elastomer of (a) in a discrete microscopic phase.

Polychloroprene compounded with large particle, high structure carbon black and finely divided silica especially when combined with certain curants and plasticizer yields, upon curing, articles which exhibit high tear resistance and low compression set and are admirably suited for high temperature, fatigue producing applications as suspension bushings.
