Xerographic photoreceptor life is improved while maintaining output print quality by adjusting the AC charging actuator of a xerographic machine to a point at which photoconductor life is optimized while maintaining output print quality. Where the actuator is voltage, the actuator is set a predetermined amount above the knee voltage of the photoreceptor surface potential versus peak-to-peak voltage curve, which is determined during operation of the machine. Instead of determining the knee voltage, calibration sheets can be generated for various values of the actuator, the best sheet with the least possible actuator value is selected, and the AC charging actuator is set to the value corresponding to the best sheet. The sheets can be evaluated by a user, or an optical array sensor can be used to scan the sheets so that the controller can compare the sheets to stored criteria to automatically select the best sheet and set the actuator. Alternatively, the optical array sensor can scan calibration images directly from the intermediate transfer belt or other image bearing member, thus eliminating the use of paper for calibration.

Photoconductor life through active control of charger settings

A control system for use with a development process including at least one magnetic roll with a settable speed is provided. The controller is directly or indirectly responsive to a reload feedback signal, which signal is generated in response to changes in output reload performance of the development process. In the case of direct responsiveness, the controller uses one or more reload feedback signals to facilitate magnetic roll speed setting. In the case of indirect responsiveness, the controller uses a reload sensitivity signal, which reload sensitivity signal varies as a function of input digital image content and output reload performance feedback, to facilitate magnetic roll speed setting.

Optimization of magnetic roll speed profile in an electrophotographic printing system

Optimization of transfer settings for a given paper and environmental condition is achieved by running a series of prints with varying settings of a transfer parameter such as voltage or current. The mass remaining on the intermediate belt after transfer is monitored for each of the prints. This may be achieved using the same sensor used to monitor and control the developed mass on the intermediate transfer member, such as a transfer belt. A suitable sensor is an Extended Toner Area Coverage (ETAC) mass sensor. Because the control is based on actual conditions for a given paper and environment, it can ensure optimum copy quality over a wide range of papers and conditions, while enabling the minimum target mass per unit area to assure the proper density.

Method and apparatus for optimization of second transfer parameters

A toner composition includes toner particles having at least one spacer of substantially monodisperse latex particles that are dried and attached to the toner particles, in which the attached latex particles have an average particle size of from about 60 nm to about 500 nm. The presence of the spacer enables improved toner transfer efficiency maintainability while maintaining excellent tribo level, tribo stability with aging, charge through performance and cohesion behavior with aging.

A printing system includes a plurality of marking engines for applying images to print media. An output destination is configured for receiving imaged print media from the plurality of marking engines. A print media transport system conveys print media between the marking engines and the output destination. A control system determines whether the marking engines are printing images of consistent or acceptable gloss and, where the marking engines are determined not to be consistent or providing acceptable gloss, adjusts at least one of the plurality of marking engines to reduce a variation in gloss between images applied by the marking engines.

A development system for an electrophotographic system including: a magnetic brush roll speed selector for selecting a rotational speed for a magnetic brush roll in a development system of the electrophotographic system; and a controller, responsive to the rotational speed, for adjusting xerographic actuators to maintain DMA within a predefined range.

Feed forward mitigation of development transients

An improved development system for an electrophotographic system includes a reload defect detector for generating a signal corresponding to a potential for reload defect detected in an image to be developed by an electrophotographic system; and a magnetic roll speed selector for selecting a rotational speed for a magnetic roll in a development system of the electrophotographic system, the selected rotational speed corresponding to the generated reload defect potential signal. The speed of the magnetic roll is selected to be a lower speed in response to the potential for reload defect being relatively low. The slower rotation of the magnetic roll prolongs the life of the developer and extends the operational life of the development system before corrective action is needed.

Method and system for reducing toner abuse in development systems of electrophotographic systems

A xerographic printing system includes a group of marking modules which apply a marking medium to print media, at least one of the marking modules being a custom marking module. A control system is configured for being operatively linked with marking modules. The printing system has a first mode of operation in which a first plurality of the group of marking modules is operatively linked to the control system and a second mode of operation in which a second plurality of the marking modules is operatively linked to the control system, the second plurality of marking modules including the at least one custom marking module.

A black toner of toner particles including at least one binder, at least one black colorant, and a package of external additives is described, wherein the at least one binder includes a styrene acrylate binder and wherein the external additives include each of a first silica having an average particle size of from about 35 to about 45 nm, a second silica having an average particle size of from about 135 to about 160 nm, and a titania having an average particle size of from about 35 to about 45 nm. Also described is a developer that includes the black toner and carrier particles comprising a core of ferrite coated with a coating comprising a polymethyl methacrylate polymer and fluoro-copolymer, carbon black and melamine beads. The black toner and developer are preferably used in a semiconductive magnetic brush development system.

An apparatus for developing a latent image recorded on an imaging surface, including: a housing defining a reservoir storing a supply of developer material wherein the developer material having predefined triboelectric charge about 20 to 30 microCoulombs/gram. A donor member is mounted partially in the housing and spaced from the imaging surface, for transporting toner on an outer surface of the donor member to a region opposed from the imaging surface. An electrode member is disposed in between the donor member and the imaging surface. A system is provided for loading a region of the doner member with developer material. A charging device ion charges the toner loaded on the region of the donor member to a predefined charge level. A power supply electrically biases the electrode member positioned in close proximity to the imaging member to detach toner from the region of the donor member as to form a toner cloud for developing the latent image.

Coating compositions for development electrodes and methods thereof

A color electrophotographic printing machine in which latent images having a resolution of at least 1.44 million pixels per square inch are recorded on a photoconductive member. Different color toner powder images are developed in superimposed registration with one another to form a composite multicolor image. The composite multicolor image is transferred from the photoconductive member to a receiving member. Toner particles which have a selected pigmentation and small volume average diameters are used to minimize curl of the receiving member.
