Disclosed herein are new methods of treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and other fibrotic diseases of the liver in a subject by modulating PPAR&#x3b4; with sulfonyl-substituted bicyclic compounds and compositions as pharmaceuticals.

The hepatoprotective effect of IL-10 is described, in particular, the use of interleukin-10 in the treatment of liver damage (e.g. fibrosis or cirrhosis) in a difficult-to-treat patient afflicted with chronic hepatitis C virus infection who has failed to respond to, or achieve a sustained virologic response to an anti-HCV therapy(e.g., interferon-&agr; in combination with ribavirin).

Treatment of hepatitis C virus infections with interleukin-10

A combination of interleukin 10 and methotrexate is used to suppress autoimmune diseases including arthritis and psoriasis. It has been discovered that administration of a combination of interleukin 10 and methotrexate causes suppression of T cell proliferation. Concurrent use of both agents avoids the toxicity associated with higher doses of methotrexate.

Combined use of interleukin 10 and methotrexate for immuno-modulatory therapy

There is disclosed a method for treating chronic hepatitis C infection in patients in need of such treating comprising administering an amount of alpha interferon in association with an amount of ribavirin effective to treat chronic hepatitis C infection with the absence or substantial reduction of side effects associated with administration of ribavirin and alpha interferon.
