A method for manufacturing Li.sub.2 M.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 which comprises the steps of providing LiM.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 ; providing a lithium salt; forming a mixture of the LiM.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 and lithium salt in a liquid medium; adding a reducing agent to the mixture; heating for sufficient time to effect substantially complete conversion; and separating the product Li.sub.2 M.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 .

A method for manufacturing Li.sub.1+x Mn.sub.2 O.sub.4 comprising the steps of providing LiMn.sub.2 O.sub.4 or .beta.-MnO.sub.2 ; providing a source of lithium; dissolving lithium from the lithium source in a liquid medium in which lithium generates solvated electrons or the reduced form of an electron-transfer catalyst; and contacting the LiMn.sub.2 O.sub.4 or .beta.-MnO.sub.2 with the liquid medium containing the dissolved lithium and the solvated electrons or the reduced form of the electron-transfer catalyst.

A method for manufacturing Li.sub.2 Mn.sub.2 O.sub.4 comprising the steps of providing .beta.-MnO.sub.2 or .lambda.-MnO.sub.2 ; providing a source of lithium; dissolving lithium from the lithium source in a liquid medium in which lithium generates solvated electrons or the reduced form of an electron-transfer catalyst; and contacting the .beta.-MnO.sub.2 or .lambda.-MnO.sub.2 with the liquid medium containing the dissolved lithium and the solvated electrons or the reduced form of the electron-transfer catalyst.

A method for manufacturing Li.sub.2 M.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 comprising the steps of providing LiM.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 ; providing a source of lithium; dissolving lithium from the lithium source in a liquid medium in which lithium generates solvated electrons or the reduced form of an electron-transfer catalyst; and contacting the LiM.sub.b Mn.sub.2-b O.sub.4 with the liquid medium containing the dissolved lithium and the solvated electrons or the reduced form of the electron-transfer catalyst, wherein M is selected from the group Al, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu.

A method for manufacturing Li.sub.2 Mn.sub.2 O.sub.4 which comprises the steps of providing LiMn.sub.2 O.sub.4 ; providing a lithium salt; forming a solution or suspension of the LiMn.sub.2 O.sub.4 and lithium salt in a liquid medium; and adding a reducing agent to the solution or suspension.

A process for co-producing hydrogen peroxide and another useful product, namely either an oxalate ester or a carbonate ester product, is provided The process comprises reacting a saturated monohydric alcohol with carbon monoxide and a quinone to form an oxalate ester or a carbonate ester product and hydroquinone. The hydroquinone is then reacted with oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide and a quinone. The quinone from the second reaction can be recycled to the alcohol-carbon monoxide first reaction

Co-production of hydrogen peroxide and a useful ester

The present invention provides improved devices for the production of electrical energy from mixtures of oxygen (i.e., pure oxygen, air, or a similar source of free oxygen) and fuel (i.e., hydrogen and/or a hydrogen-yielding fuel). The devices generally comprise: a first electrode means for receiving electrons; a second electrode means for supplying electrons; and an electrolytic diffusion means, positioned between the two electrode means, for conducting ions from one electrode means to the other electrode means and for conducting oxygen and fuel, oxygen and hydrogen, or oxygen and a combination of fuel and hydrogen from one electrode means to the other electrode means (FIG. 1). At least one of the electrode means is permeable. Additionally, the first electrode means comprises a catalytic material which is a highly active catalyst for the formation of H.sub.2 O.sub.2 from H.sub.2 and O.sub.2.

Devices providing electrical energy from fuel/oxygen mixtures

A process for co-producing hydrogen peroxide and another useful product, namely either an oxalate ester or a carbonate ester product, is provided. The process comprises reacting a saturated monohydric alcohol with carbon monoxide and a quinone to form an oxalate ester or a carbonate ester product and hydroquinone. The hydroquinone is then reacted with oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide and a quinone. The quinone from the second reaction can be recycled to the alcohol-carbon monoxide first reaction.
