A pump body of a high pressure fuel pump defines a compression chamber in fluid communication with a first recess dug in a first outer face. A second recess is dug in a second outer face of the body. An inlet channel opens in a conduit extending between the first recess and the second recess.

Fuel pump

An inlet valve arrangement for a pump head of a fuel pump for use in a common rail fuel injection system comprises an inlet valve member moveable between open and closed positions to control the flow from a source of low-pressure fuel to a pumping chamber of the fuel pump. The inlet valve member is arranged to open in response to the pressure difference between the fluid pressure of fuel on an inlet side of the inlet valve member and the fluid pressure in the pumping chamber exceeding a threshold value. The inlet valve arrangement comprises means for selectively applying a closing force on the inlet valve member to bias it toward the closed position, such that, in use, the application of the closing force by said means acts to increase the threshold value of the pressure difference at which the inlet valve member opens.

Inlet valve arrangement for a fuel pump

A pump head suitable for use in a fuel pump for a common rail fuel injection system, comprises a pump head housing defining a plunger bore and a pumping chamber. Fuel is pressurized within the pumping chamber by a plunger reciprocating within the plunger bore. The pump head housing includes an inlet valve arrangement for controlling fuel flow into the pumping chamber. The inlet valve arrangement includes a valve member movable between open and closed positions in response to fuel pressure within a gallery. The gallery communicates with an external chamber defined by a closure member externally mounted to the pump head housing. In use, the gallery communicates with a source of low-pressure fuel via the external chamber. The pump head housing has a projection which locates the closure member on the pump head housing.

A valve assembly for use in a fuel pump comprises a body member with a valve aperture, a valve member movable within the body member and adapted to close the valve aperture, and a biasing arrangement having a first part fixed with respect to one of the body member and the valve member and a second part fixed with respect to the other of the body member and the valve member. The biasing arrangement is adapted to bias the valve member to close the valve aperture. The biasing arrangement comprises a helical spring with a first diameter at the first part and a second diameter at the second part. The first diameter of the helical spring is different from the second diameter of the spring. The helical spring is at its first part retained by an interference fit against the member with respect to which it is fixed.

Valve assembly for fuel pump

A fuel injector for use in an injector arrangement including a pumping plunger, a pump chamber and a spill valve arrangement controlling communication between the pump chamber and a low pressure fuel reservoir. The fuel injector comprises a valve needle which is engageable with a seating to control fuel delivery through a fuel injector outlet opening, a first control chamber being arranged such that the fuel pressure therein acts on a surface associated with the valve needle and a second control chamber being arranged such that fuel pressure therein acts on a surface associated with the spill valve arrangement. The injector further comprises a piezoelectric actuator arrangement including a piezoelectric element having first and second ends, the first end being associated with the spill valve arrangement and the second end being associated with the valve needle such that, in use, operation of the spill valve arrangement and movement of the valve needle is controlled by controlling the energisation level of the piezoelectric element.

Fuel injector

A fuel injector comprises a first needle, and a second needle slidably within a passage formed in the first needle. The needles are engageable with respective seatings to control fuel delivery through respective groups of outlet openings. Load transmitting means are provided whereby movement of the first needle can be transmitted to the second needle. Also described is an injector in which a second needle is provided with formations defining an integral resilient biasing arrangement.

The present invention provides a fuel injector comprising a nozzle body within which first and second valve needles are slidable. The first valve needle is engagable with a first seating to control fuel injection from a first outlet opening provided in the nozzle body and the second valve needle is engagable with a second seating to control fuel injection from a second outlet opening provided in the nozzle body. The fuel injector further comprises first and second control chambers for fuel, whereby fuel pressure within the first and second control chambers controls movement of the first and second valve needles away from their respective seatings so as to permit fuel delivery from a selected outlet opening. The first and second valve needles being arranged adjacent to one another.

A fuel injector comprising a valve needle engageable with a seating to control the supply of fuel to an outlet opening, comprising an adjustment member including an opening. The adjustment member is moveable to move the opening thereof relative to the outlet opening to vary the restriction to fuel flow formed by said outlet opening and, hence, the rate at which fuel is delivered by said injector.

An actuator housing for a piezoelectric actuator arrangement including a piezoelectric stack, the housing comprising a first housing portion for connecting leads which are electrically connected to the piezoelectric stack and a second housing portion for the piezoelectric stack. The first and second housing portions are integrally moulded and are formed from a material which permits flexing of the first housing portion and the connecting leads.

A fuel injector having a nozzle body defining a bore, an outwardly opening valve member slidable within the bore, the valve member defining a blind bore within which an inwardly opening valve needle is slidable, the valve needle being engageable with a seating to control fuel flow towards a first outlet opening provided in the valve member, and a second outlet opening provided in the valve member, the second outlet opening being in constant communication with a part of the blind bore upstream of the seating and being located such that, in a closed position of the valve member, the second outlet opening is closed by the nozzle body, outward movement of the valve member to an open position permitting fuel delivery through the second outlet opening.

A fuel injector includes a first needle, and a second needle slidable within a passage formed in the first needle. The needles are engageable with respective seatings to control fuel delivery through respective groups of outlet openings. A load transmitter is provided whereby movement of the first needle can be transmitted to the second needle. An alternative injector includes a second needle provided with formations defining an integral resilient biasing arrangement.

A fuel injector including a nozzle body having a bore defining a seating, a valve member having a plurality of passages providing fluid communication between the bore and a plurality of outlet openings, the outlet openings defining a first group of openings at a lower axial position on the valve member and a second group of openings at a higher axial position on the valve member. The valve member is slidable within the bore and is engageable with the seating to control fuel flow from the outlet openings. The outlet openings are shaped and orientated such that the sprays formed at the first and second groups of outlet openings do not interfere with one another.

A pump/injector arrangement comprises a pump including a pump chamber arranged to communicate through a fuel line with an injector. A valve is provided within the injector to control whether or not fuel is able to flow from the fuel line to a control chamber. The control chamber communicates with a low pressure reservoir through a restricted passage. A by-pass is provided to permit fuel to flow from the reservoir by-passing the restricted passage.

Fuel Pump/injector

A pump is disclosed having a variable cam arrangement under the influence of which a plunger is reciprocable. The variable cam arrangement comprises a plurality of cam rings which in an embodiment of the pump are relatively moveable in order to adjust the shape of the effective cam surface of the cam arrangement, and hence adjust the delivery rate of the pump.

A fuel supply apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine comprising a rotary distributor member having a delivery passage which can register in turn with outlet ports connected to the injection nozzles of the engine. Fuel is supplied to the delivery passage from an accumulator under the control of a valve. The accumulator is charged with fuel by means of a high pressure pump which is a cam actuated pump and fuel is supplied to the high pressure pump by a low pressure pump. A valve is provided to control the output pressure of the low pressure pump so that the amount of fuel supplied to the high pressure pump can be varied for the purpose of controlling the fuel pressure within the accumulator. This pressure is sensed by a transducer which supplies a signal to a control system which controls the flow of electric current in the valve.
