Weir and choke plate for a solid-jacket centrifuge drum

A continuous-operation centrifuge drum for concentrating suspended solids. The concentrated solids are diverted out of an outer solids space through channels into an inner chamber, whence the concentrated solids are continuously extracted. At least one vortical-outflow space is positioned between the channels and the inner chamber, with the points of which the medium enters the channels distributed around the outer demarcation of the outflow space and with the outlet from the outflow space extending from a radially outward region in the outflow space to the inner chamber. A separate vortical-outflow space is associated with each channel. Each outflow space consists of two demarcating surfaces, preferably extending in planes perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the drum, and of a surrounding wall that connects them, and extends radially to a multiple of its axial length. The points at which the medium enters the channels preferably extend in planes through the axis of rotation of the drum and the outlets from the vortical-outflow spaces are positioned away from the wall.

Continuous-operation centrifuge drum for concentrating suspended solids

The intake space of a centrifuge drum is divided into a vestibule with ribs and an intake chamber without ribs. The vestibule communicates with the intake chamber through an annular gap between the outside diameter of a disk secured to an intake pipe and the inside diameter of the intake space. The intake chamber communicates with a set of disks through channels. The diameter D.sub.K of the intake chamber at the level of the channels is longer than the diameter D.sub.F that must be maintained at the upper surface of the centrifugate in a skimming chamber during operation. Since the incoming centrifugate does not rotate in the intake chamber and since no rotational pressure is accordingly generated, the intake pressure in the intake pipe is transmitted when the intake chamber is full to the centrifugate in the intake chamber, until the requisite level of centrifugate in the skimming chamber is attained. The pressure that is transmitted to the annular gap is compensated for by the rotational pressure of the centrifugate in the vestibule, allowing absolutely smooth distribution of the centrifugate when the intake chamber is full throughout the whole operational range of the drum.

Centrifuge drum for clarifying or separating centrifugates

A self-emptying centrifuge drum has an intake for the centrifugate, a peeling chamber that accommodates a peeling disk for diverting the clarified liquid, and an automatic device that senses the level of solids in the separating space of the drum. The sensing device consists of channels extending from the separating space to another peeling chamber with another peeling disk. The outflow channel from the second peeling disk communicates with a measuring instrument that operates in conjunction with controls that introduce the extracted solids into the drum. Peeling channels are provided in the second peeling disk, extending out from its circumference and opening tangentially into an annular space that does not have any ribs and that extends radially inside the disk to detect the level of solids in the separating space even when centrifugates that do not block the channels sufficiently are being clarified.

Self-emptying centrifuge drum

A centrifuge drum is provided with a seal consisting of a narrow gap between the drum and centrifuge housing. The seal is located between the actual housing and the solids catch chamber. There is a pressure-compensation space at the drum in the vicinity of the seal. The exchange of air that occurs at the seal in a centrifuge without the compensation space between the solids catch chamber and the housing in accordance with the invention and that leads to deposits of solids in the housing is accordingly displaced into the compensation space.

In the continuous-operation centrifuge drum for concentrating suspended solids the solids are conveyed to a central chamber from a solids space through channels. Before the solids arrive in the central chamber, they must travel through an unribbed annular space. Since the solids concentrate tends to increase its existing kinetic energy, a higher flow resistance is generated. As viscosity increases, the solids, however, are more powerfully affected by friction in the unribbed annular space, their kinetic energy decreases, and the flow resistance decreases. The resulting increase in the volume of solids extracted also decreases its concentration and hence its viscosity. This behavior of the solids in the unribbed annular space of a rotating drum results in automatic regulation of the solids concentration.

The centrifuge has a self-emptying drum. The jacket of the drum has expulsion apertures that lead from the solids space and that can be closed off by a piston slide. With the piston slide is associated a closure chamber. The closure chamber has channels for supplying closure liquid and communicates through a let-off channel in the form of an annular gap with a chamber. The inside diameter of the chamber equals the outside diameter of the closure chamber. The chamber can accommodate all the closure liquid in the closure chamber. This makes it possible to completely empty the closure chamber, so that there is no residual closure force on the piston slide.

Centrifugal separator drum (FIG. 1) for the clarification and separation of liquids, having one or more paring systems 12, 13 for the removal of the clarified or separated liquids, a stationary inlet tube 11 which communicates with a smooth, cylindrical inlet chamber 18, which rotates with the drum and is affixed to the latter, via an opening that is slightly larger than the inlet tube. Outlets ports 20 lead out of the inlet chamber into a forechamber 21 which communicates on the one hand with an annular chamber 24 situated ahead of the inlet chamber and on the other hand with the riser passages 23 of the plate insert 4. According to the invention, the inlet chamber 18 is sealed off from the external atmosphere; the distance from the outlet of the inlet tube 11 to the entry of the outlet ports 20 amounts to at least thrice the inside diameter of the inlet chamber, and the total cross section of the outlet ports is smaller than the cross section of the inlet chamber and larger than the cross section of the inlet tube. The outlet ports have one or more chokes. Thereby, during operation, an increased liquid pressure develops in the lower part of the inlet chamber ahead of the outlet ports and the inlet chamber can be kept largely filled with liquid.

A centrifuge drum with a beveled-plate insert consists of individual plates held apart by spacing strips. The plates are mounted on a distributor foot. The bottom of the distributor foot has channels through which the liquid to be centrifuged is conducted into the separation space. There are ribs in the separation space. Between the ribs are lifting channels into which the channels in the distributor foot empty. The lifting channels are formed by the ribs and are positioned behind the spacing strips in the direction in which the drum rotates. The layout of the lifting channels prevents the liquid flowing into the plate insert from mixing with the solid particles that have been centrifuged out and are sliding out of the insert.

Centrifuge drum for clarifying and/or separating liquids

A centrifuge with a drive-mechanism that incorporates a vertical spindle mounted on ball or roller bearings and driven by a belt in such a way as to rotate while aligning itself in space around a point of attachment on its longitudinal axis with respect to the framework of the centrifuge and with respect to a bearing housing that is supported on the framework. The midplane of the drive belt extends through the point of attachment, with which the center of mass of the self-aligning components also coincide. The overall length of the spindle is short. The ratio L/D of the distance L between the bearings to the diameter D of the bearings ranges from approximately 0 to 2.

Centrifuge with a belt-driven spindle

A continuously operating screw ejection centrifugal separator. The drum and the screw are driven by an epicyclic gear train. Changes in torque between the screw and the drum of the centrifuge are measured and the differential speed of the screw and drum is controlled so as to obtain substantially steady state operation of the separator. For the control, a second epicyclic gear train is associated with the first-mentioned epicyclic gear train.
