A respiratory gas analyzer device (), such as a capnograph device, is disclosed. A gas measurement component (), such as a carbon dioxide measurement component in the case of a capnograph, is configured to measure at least one respired gas component (e.g. carbon dioxide). A pump () is connected to draw respired gas through the gas measurement component. A pressure gauge () is connected to measure pressure in an airflow pathway including the gas measurement component and the pump. An electronic pump controller () is programmed to start the pump in response to pressure measured by the pressure gauge satisfying a pump turn on criterion.

Automatic sampling accessory system and method of detection

A mainstream gas monitoring system and method that includes using a mainstream airway adapter and a gas sensing assembly associated with the airway adapter to measure an analyte of a gas flow through the adapter. A gas sensing portion outputs a signal indicative of the analyte in a gas flow in the mainstream airway adapter. A processing portion receives the signal from the gas sensing portion and determines an amount of the analyte in the gas flow based on the signal from the gas sensing portion. The processing portion determines whether the oxygen measurements are of sufficient quality for their intended use, such as for measuring oxygen consumption or metabolic estimations. Quality measurements may be used to improve accuracy of derived metabolic estimations. Methods are provided by which carbon dioxide measurements can be processed and substituted for direct oxygen measurement for all or part of a respiratory cycle.

Signal quality determination and signal correction system and methods

A mainstream gas monitoring system and method that includes a mainstream airway adapter, and a gas sensing assembly associated with the mainstream airway adapter to measure an analyte of a gas flow through the adapter. A gas sensing portion outputs a signal indicative of the analyte in a gas flow in the mainstream airway adapter. A processing portion receives the signal from the gas sensing portion and determines an amount of the analyte in the gas flow based on the signal from the gas sensing portion. The gas sensing portion is subject to temperature variations associated with variations in flow rate and direction of respiratory gases. Methods are described that utilize the measurement of instantaneous respiratory flow rate combined with estimates of gas temperature and composition to estimate the sensor cooling effects from which a flow based time varying compensation factor is derived.

Temperature compensation of a respiratory gas sensor

A method of sampling one or more respiratory profile characteristics and monitoring a variety of respiratory profile parameters. The sampled respiratory characteristics include respiratory flow rate, respiratory pressure, and partial pressure of at least one constituent of a patient's respiration. The method detects patient breaths, determines whether each breath is a spontaneous breath or a ventilator-induced breath and calculates various respiratory profile parameters based on the sampled measurements. The method displays the respiratory profile parameters in graphic and numeric forms. Preferably, the method allows a user to select the displayed respiratory profile parameters.

If a best frequency is found, a pulse rate and SpOmay be output. If a best frequency is not found, other, conventional techniques for calculating pulse rate and SpOmay be used.

Method, apparatus, and system for removing motion artifacts from measurements of bodily parameters

An apparatus and method for affording a re-breathing capability to a breathing circuit. The apparatus includes a valve that permits air flow through or re-breathing in the breathing circuit. A COsensor and an air flow sensor detects COa rate of air flow in the breathing circuit, respectively. A processor computes a parameter based on the COwaveform feature and a volumetric COwaveform feature based on signals from the air flow sensor and/or the COsensor. An alarm is triggered when the parameter deviates from a selected magnitude. In a further embodiment, at least one parameter associated with an energy source for actuating the valve is monitored. Deviation of the value from at least one selected value of the at least one parameter is corrected.

Reduced or excessive pressure may be compensated by actuation of a pressure source or a bleed valve, and monitoring may be effected so as to warn the user of any deviation from the range, or deviations of selected magnitudes or frequencies or a combination thereof. The inspired volume of COmay be monitored using air flow and COsensing, with detection of excessive COvolume triggering a warning. Similarly, measured end-tidal or end-inspired COor other appropriate measures of COconcentration may be employed as a warning trigger. Other driving energy sources for airway valves, and monitoring thereof, are also disclosed.
