The invention disclosed herein concerns a privacy enhancing device for use with IP cameras and related methods. The privacy device includes an adjustable light filter and is configured to be placed over the lens of an IP camera such that the image captured by the IP camera passes through the filter. The transparency of the light filter is controlled using a control module in response to user inputs received using an on-board user interface so as to provide varying levels of privacy ranging from an opaque state and a transparent state. Inputs that serve to facilitate and enhance operation of the device can also be received from other input sources such as connected computing devices. For security, the control path defined by the control module and the on-board user input device can be isolated from other more sophisticated control devices that can be prone to hacking and remote control.

An apparatus, method, and system to harvest and store electromagnetic energy is disclosed. The present invention uses, for example, conductive surfaces within the energy storage component itself as a means of electromagnetic energy collection. The surface may be an integral portion of the energy device, such as a charge collection surface within a battery or a capacitor that mainly provides the battery or a capacitor with a necessary function. In another embodiment of the invention a metallic or conductive surface is added to and specifically built into the energy device during manufacturing for the main purpose of collecting electromagnetic energy for the energy device but is otherwise not necessary for the energy storage component. Once the energy is collected, it can be rectified either via rectification components that were built directly into the energy storage component during its manufacture or connected external to the energy storage component but within the energy device. The so-designed energy device may represent a self-sustaining, autonomous electromagnetic energy harvesting&#x2014;energy storage device.

Described herein is, for example, a battery or capacitor over voltage (overcharge) and under-voltage protection circuit, that, for example, is adapted to not draw current from the battery or capacitor to be charged unless charge energy is detected and to not charge an energy storage device when an over-charge condition is sensed. The protection circuit may, for example, not be turned on unless an over voltage condition is present. Incoming energy to the system can be shunted to ground via a shunt load of various types including resistive loads and active components such as a zener diode. Either type of charge source, voltage or current, can be used to provide charge energy. Combining said battery or capacitor over voltage (overcharge) and under-voltage protection circuit with electronic loads, such as wireless sensors, may lead to autonomously-powered wireless sensor systems.
