Methods, apparatuses and computer-readable storage mediums for coordinated selection of RAN and core user plane components in a wireless communications network

Example implementations described herein are directed to a support node apparatus configured to support a wireless network system. The support node apparatus can be in the form of a mobility management entity and/or a serving general packet radio service. The example implementations directed herein can provide a network resource identifier and/or a globally unique temporary identifier to an associated user equipment to facilitate the transfer of the user equipment from a source support node apparatus to a target support node apparatus. In example implementations, the target support node apparatus can thereby be directly specified by use of the identifier.

Method of directed UE relocation within an MME/SGSN flex pool

In a bearer-independent core network, the switching and transport of the bearer streams is separated from the processing of call sessions that control the bearer streams. The switching and transport of the bearer streams is executed by media gateways and packet switches in the switching and transport layer of the network. The processing of calls sessions that control the bearer streams is executed by call servers in the call control layer of the network. The switching and transport layer of the network may be implemented using ATM or IP technology. In order to redirect the signaling links to a backup call server, a signaling gateway is used. Each media gateway includes a signaling gateway function. The signaling gateways redirect the signaling links by encapsulating each signaling message in a new packet in one embodiment.

Geographic redundancy for call servers in a cellular system based on a bearer-independent core network

Data communication apparatus including a port and a control entity. The control entity is operative to establish a connection with a remote entity over a first path and negotiate with the remote entity using in-band signaling over the first path establishment of a second path allowing the exchange of data between the data communication apparatus and the remote entity. The invention presents advantages from the standpoint of ease of implementation and bandwidth and resource savings. The use of an in-band messaging protocol to negotiate a establishment of the second path can be implemented generally in a straight forward manner. At the same time, the ability to transfer at least part of the connection to the second path avoids the drawbacks that would arise if that part of the connection were constrained to the first path. This feature allows the operator to take advantage of benefits provided by the second path but not available to the first path.

Methods and apparatus for data communication

A data communication apparatus, comprising an interface for enabling communication with a remote entity via a network and a control entity in communication with said interface. The control entity is operative to establish a packet-switched connection with the remote entity through the network and to negotiate with the remote entity using in-band signaling entry into a codec-bypass mode of operation. In this way, a codec-bypass connection, which enhances speech quality, can be established over a packet network, which reduces bandwidth.

A method in an SGSN of a GPRS/UMTS network for wireless communications including a mobile node, the SGSN, a GGSN, an HLR, an SMS-G and a SMS-SC includes introducing a delay after a mobile node has attached and is connected to allow the delivery of SMS messages before initiating tear down procedures to place the mobile node in a standby mode of operation by tearing down the signaling links between the mobile node and the SGSN. Generally, the inventive process performed by the SGSN includes receiving, from the mobile node, an initial UE (attach request) message to establish a signaling link, authenticating the mobile node to determine whether to allow it to attach to the network, accepting and completing the attach, informing the HLR that the mobile node is attached and delaying the tear down of the signaling links for a period sufficient to enable the SMS-SC to deliver any queued SMS messages.

A system and method for controlling media gateways that interconnect disparate networks is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises receiving a request for a circuit service call channel, the request comprising information identifying a media gateway selected out of a plurality of media gateways, the selected media gateway having a TDM circuit selected out of a plurality of TDM circuits associated with it; selecting an ATM VCC from a plurality of ATM VCCs associated only with the selected media gateway; and transmitting an Establish Request to a Q.2630 module of a signaling gateway.

System and method for controlling media gateways that interconnect disparate networks

An improved method and system for providing packet-switched management of switching and handoff functions for a mobile terminal during call setup and user communication phases of a telecommunication session. A radio access network (RAN) including an air-interface base station in communication with the mobile terminal is in communicative contact with a packet-switched core network comprised of a plurality nodes which provide functionality that is equivalent to that of a network of Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) and Visitor Location Registers (VLRs). A packet-switching backbone network provides communication transport facilities within the core network. Within the core network is a wireless access gateway (WAG) having media channels that provide an interface between the RAN and the core network. An Anchor Packet Gateway (APG) extends the bearer path from the WAG, and hides mobility between WAGs during the user communication phase. A wireless mobility server (WMS) in communicative contact with the WAG and APG serves as a media gateway controller for the WAG and APG, controlling connectivity of the media channels within the WAG and APG. A PSTN Trunking Media Gateway (PTMG) provides connectivity between the core network and the PSTN. A Call Server (CS) in communicative contact with the PTMG and WMS serves as a media gateway controller for the PTMG and WMS, where the WMS presents the appearance of a media gateway to the CS, but in fact functions as a media gateway controller for the WAG and APG. The CS and WMS together present the appearance of a single MSC/VLR to the public cellular or PCS network.

System and method for providing packet-switched telephony

A method of controlling handover of real-time packet data flow within a wireless telecommunications system packet domain without disrupting communication between user equipment and the anchor packet gateway. In a preferred embodiment, the wireless telecommunications system includes user equipment such as a wireless telephone, a serving wireless gateway, a drift wireless gateway, and an anchor packet gateway. Once it is determined that handover of real-time packet data flow is needed, the drift wireless gateway is prepared to become the serving wireless gateway. The anchor packet gateway is then prepared for serving wireless gateway relocation by having the anchor packet gateway initiate bicasting of downlink packet data flow. Uplink and downlink packet data flows are then monitored at the drift wireless gateway and the drift wireless gateway and the serving wireless gateway are synchronized for relocation. The drift wireless gateway is then utilized as the new serving wireless gateway.
