Described is an acetabular assembly comprising: an acetabular cup component () having an outer convex surface (), an inner concave surface () defining a cup cavity, and a plurality of openings () that extend between the inner concave surface and the outer convex surface and that are configured to accommodate a fastener for attaching the acetabular cup component to an acetabulum of a patient; an insert bearing liner () defined by an inner concave surface () and an outer convex surface (), and configured to be located at least partially within die cup cavity of the acetabular cup component; and a plurality of spacers () that are configured to be inserted into the plurality of openings in the acetabular cup component from the inner concave surface.

A trial system for determining a suitable proximal body implant for hip replacement surgery comprises a separator instrument, a trial body attachable to a distal stem, and an insert. The insert is positioned within the trial body to receive the separator instrument. As the separator instrument is rotated about its axis, a ramp element of the insert guides a pin of the separator instrument, so as to separate the trial body from the distal stem. Additional apparatus, methods, and systems are disclosed.

Modular proximal body trial

Templating software can determine and visually depict the location and size of cuts in a trochanteric osteotomy, including an extended trochanteric osteotomy. The software can also calculate the size and area of fixation for a newly implanted prosthesis, based upon which the new prosthesis that will be implanted in a particular patient can be selected. Additionally, an adjustable cut guide can stabilize and guide the cuts during the procedure.

Devices and methods for trochanteric osteotomy

During hip replacement surgery, a practitioner can attach a distal stem to a femur of the patient and can then fixedly attach a proximal body to the distal stem using a bolt. Prior to tightening, the bolt can be heated to an elevated temperature greater than average human core body temperature. The practitioner can tighten the bolt to a specified torque while the bolt is at the elevated temperature. After tightening, the bolt cools to average human core body temperature and experiences a tensile stress due to the effects of thermal expansion. The tensile stress in the bolt produces a compressive force between the distal stem and the proximal body. The compressive force can increase the attachment strength of the bolt to the distal stem and the proximal body, beyond what can be achieved by solely torquing the bolt to the specified level during surgery without first heating the bolt.

An adjustable reaming device can include a proximal reamer and a positionable element. The positionable element removably attaches to the proximal reamer at one of a plurality of discrete longitudinal locations along the proximal reamer. A distal end of the positionable element forms a stop, which can contact a proximal end of a distal reamer and thereby limit distal motion of the proximal reamer with respect to the distal reamer. When the distal reamer is in contact with the positionable element, the distal reamer and proximal reamer are longitudinally offset by a one of a plurality of specified offsets. In some examples, the specified offsets correspond to a plurality of specified, discrete lengths for which implantable femoral stems are available.

An insert press that has a threaded shaft with a distal end is disclosed. An insert driver is disposed at the distal end of the threaded shaft. The insert press also includes a press housing that provides a bore through which the threaded shaft extends. The bore is transformable from a first condition in which the threaded shaft is threadably translatable in the bore to a second condition in which the threaded shaft is non-threadably translatable in the bore.

A femoral reamer () can include a base material () and a coating () disposed on the base material. The coating can be harder than the base material and, as a result, the femoral reamer can wear more slowly than if the coating was absent. The coating can be a different color than the base material. When the coating is worn off, such wear can be easily observed from a visual inspection of the femoral reamer. The coating can have an initial thickness (i.e., a thickness prior to use) that is related to a tolerance on a size and/or a shape of a hole drilled by the femoral reamer. When the coating is worn off, the size and/or the shape of the hole drilled by the femoral reamer may be at or near an edge of a specified tolerance range. The femoral reamer can be part of a kit and a method.
