Polypeptides comprising a C3b binding region are disclosed, as well as nucleic acids and vectors encoding such polypeptides, and cells and compositions comprising such polypeptides. Also disclosed are uses and methods using the polypeptides for treating and preventing diseases and conditions.

The present invention relates to an improved method of providing photoreceptor function to a cell, for example for use in the treatment of retinal degeneration. The present invention also relates to compositions and kits, in particular for use in such methods.

Treatment of retinal degeneration using gene therapy

The invention relates to the use of an agent that promotes class III SLRP activity in the manufacture of a medicament for the inhibition of blood vessel formation. In addition the invention relates to the use of an agent that promotes class III SLRP activity in the manufacture of a medicament for the prevention and/or treatment of conditions characterized by excessive activity and/or migration of monocytes and/or macrophages. Suitable agents may include class III SLRPs such as opticin. Methods of treatment using agents able to promote class III SLRP activity are also provided.

Opticin nucleic acid administration reduces blood vessel formation

The invention relates to identifying agents which have the ability to preferentially inhibit binding to targets such as heparin of the H384 allotypic variant of human complement Factor H, the allotypic variant associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and the non-disease associated form of the same factor (Y384). The targets of interest show differential binding of the two allotypic variants and antagonists thus identified are of interest in developing treatments for AMD.
