Fluid connector for connecting a first fluid-bearing conduit in a capillary tube to a second fluid-bearing conduit in a receiver. An internal fitting assembly includes an internal fitting body, a body cavity for receiving a ferrule and a self-compensating nut, the ferrule and self-compensating nut being locatable on the capillary tube, and an internal ferrule seat located on a portion of the body cavity, against which a tapered portion of the ferrule is applied to so as to obtain a first fluid-tight seal between the capillary tube, the ferrule, and the ferrule seat. The forward end of the internal fitting body includes a nose cone, having thereon an annular projection, a neck portion which connects the nose cone to the remainder of the internal fitting body, and an annular seal located on the neck portion, wherein the annular projection defines a first frustoconical segment and the annular seal includes a second frustoconical segment, the first and second frustoconical segments being configured to establish a second fluid-tight seal at the receiver port surface as the forward end of the internal fitting body is coaxially aligned with the receiver port and thrust into the receiver cavity.

Method for the analysis of one or more analytes present in a sample carried in a first fluid. The first fluid is combined with a first detector fluid and a second detector fluid to provide a fluid mixture which flows across the surface of an igniter. The analytes are ionized by means of an ionization process. The ion current is collected and measured at a collector electrode adjacent to the igniter. The flow of at least one of the first detector fluid and second detector fluid is modulated during an ignition sequence according to predetermined criteria so as to facilitate flame ignition.

An analytical instrument preferably in the form of a chromatograph includes a computer, a pneumatic controller responsive to the computer, and planar manifold assembly. The planar manifold assembly includes one or more fluid-handling functional devices that may be surface mounted to a planar manifold. The fluid-handling functional device may be constructed as a valve, operable in response to a control signal from pneumatic controller for controlling fluid flow in selected fluid flow paths in the chromatograph, or as a sensor, a fluid regulator, a fluid flow input or output line, or the like.

A simplified method and apparatus for electronic pressure control with compensation for current operating temperature and pressures in which computer memory is employed for storing a plurality of firmware models which characterize the effects of temperature and pressure variations on (1) fluid flow through the flow restrictor, (2) the temperature sensor, and (3) the pressure sensor, so that control signals can be generated which compensate a plurality of thermally coupled sensors for changes in current operating temperatures and pressures.

An oven for a chromatograph is shown in which intake and exhaust ports are both located on the opposite side of the fan from the columns, and in such manner that ambient air entering through the intake port merges with hot air from the oven before reaching the columns.

Venting method for a chromatograph oven

A method for cooling gas chromatograph ovens with ambient room temperature air utilizing two separate air passages through an oven door. The door remains closed during the heating and cooling cycles which take place inside the oven housing. A rotating stirring fan internal to the oven creates regions of relatively higher and lower air pressures. The two air passages are disposed adjacent to these pressure regions to draw room temperature air into the oven, and to exhaust hot air from the oven. Within the oven door there is a movable, spring mounted, oven closure hatch in which the first air passage is located. This air passage is opened and closed by a movable cover. The hatch also establishes the second air passage when it is spaced-apart from the oven housing. Both air passages are opened and closed in response to movement of the hatch. An actuation device that can interface with a programmable actuation controller opens and closes the hatch as necessary for cooling the inside of the oven housing.
