A method of solid phase bonding metal pieces by securing a first and second metal pieces in edge to edge contact; subjecting the first and second metal pieces to a first upset comprising heating the first and second edges to a temperature in the range of 0.35-0.95 of the melting temperature of the first and second metal pieces and applying a first axil force to the first and second metal pieces to urge the first and second edges together, to upset the metal at the edge to edge contact and form a bond; and subjecting the bonded metal piece to a second upset comprising heating the bonded metal piece between secured locations to a temperature in the range of 0.35-0.95 of the melting temperature of the metal and applying a second axil force to the bonded metal piece to upset the bonded metal piece and form a solid phase bond.

Warm bond method for butt joining metal parts

A cutting tool includes a base made of metal having a plurality to cutting teeth along an edge of the base, wherein at least one cutting tooth has at least one notch in the cutting edge of the at least one cutting tooth. A tool is prepared by introducing a notch running longitudinally along the length of the tool in the cutting edge of the cutting teeth.

A composite metal article from two dissimilar metals is prepared. A metal base is comprised of a first metal and having first and second opposing surfaces and a least one longitudinally-positioned depression in each of the first and second opposing surfaces for receiving a wire. An elongated metal element comprised of a second metal is introduced into each of the at least one first and second depressions of the metal base to form a composite assembly, and the composite assembly is heated under pressure to urge the adjacent surfaces of the second metal elements and the depressions together to form a bonded article.

Composite metal article and method of making

A multi-gauge composite metal strip is produced from a plurality of individual metal strips of different thicknesses. The individual strips are heated, passed through an oxide reducing atmosphere and are then directed between a pair of work rolls with their adjacent edges arranged in a mutually overlapping relationship. The rolling action effects a reduction in the thickness of each strip while simultaneously effecting solid phase bonding of their overlapping edges. The resulting composite multi-gauge strip is subjected to tensile stresses which exceed the yield strength of the strip materials at the time and in the condition at which the composite strip exits from between the work rolls.

Multi-gauge bondings

A continuous process for solid-phase edge bonding a plurality of dissimilar metal strips to form a composite edge-bonded strip. A plurality of elongated metal strips of equal thickness are heated and aligned in a substantially planar, edge-to-edge relationship and pass through a pair of compression bonding rollers. The bonding roller form a rectangular-shaped cavity having a width slightly greater than the combined width of the plurality of strips and a height less than that of the strips, to reduce in thickness and further elongate the metal strips without substantially changing the combined width of the strips and to form a solid-phase bond between adjacent side edges of the strips. The strength of the solid-phase bond is substantially equal to that of the parent metal strips such that the composite strip can be cut or stamped to form detail component parts such as electronic lead frames without bond failure.
