Gasoline fuel composition suitable for use in an internal combustion engine comprising: (a) Fischer-Tropsch derived naphtha at a level from 2 to 20% v/v; (b) at least one aromatic octane booster present at a level of 0.75 to 8% v/v or less; and (c) a gasoline base fuel; wherein the gasoline fuel composition comprises 40% v/v or less of aromatics. In a preferred embodiment, the Research Octane Number (RON) of the gasoline fuel composition is increased while maintaining the aromatic content of the gasoline fuel composition at a level of 40% v/v or less, based on the gasoline fuel composition.

Fuel compositions

Diesel fuel composition suitable for use in an internal combustion engine comprising: (a) 2 mass % to 30 mass % of kerosene having a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. of 1.5 mm/s or less and a density of 810 kg/mor less; (b) 2 mass % to 20 mass % of Fischer-Tropsch derived base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40&#xb0; C. of 7.5 mm/s or greater and a density of 790 kg/mor greater; and (c) diesel base fuel. The diesel fuel composition of the present invention provides improved cold flow properties while simultaneously maintaining other properties such as viscosity and density within diesel fuel specification requirements.

Fuel composition

A fuel composition comprising a Fischer-Tropsch derived middle distillate fuel and a middle distillate flow improver, the remainder being another fuel component or mixture of fuel components. The other fuel component is selected from petroleum derived middle distillate fuel, hydrogenated vegetable oil, fatty acid methyl esters, and other Fischer Tropsch products. The Fischer-Tropsch derived middle distillate fuel is more than 80% v/v of the total composition; the maximum weight content in the carbon number distribution of the n-paraffins in the Fischer-Tropsch derived middle distillate fuel is below C16 and the weight ratio of iso to normal paraffins in the Fischer-Tropsch derived middle distillate fuel is 3.5:1 or higher. The middle distillate flow improver is a substituted ethylene polymer.

Fischer-Tropsch derived fuel compositions

Use in a gas oil fuel composition, which preferably comprises a Fischer-Tropsch derived fuel, of a compound according to formula (I): wherein: Rto Rare each independently hydrogen or a Calkyl group, where such alkyl groups may be the same as or different from one another; and X is a nitrogen- or oxygen-containing group, for the purpose of reducing the cetane number of said fuel composition; preparation of such a fuel composition; and operating a fuel consuming system. 

Use in a gas oil fuel composition, which preferably comprises a Fischer-Tropsch derived fuel, of a compound according to formula (I): wherein: Rto Rare each independently hydrogen or a Calkyl group, where such alkyl groups may be the same as or different from one another; X is a nitrogen- or oxygen-containing group, for the purpose of reducing the cetane number of said fuel composition; preparation of such a fuel composition; and operating a fuel consuming system. 

A water-in-fuel emulsion composition containing a Fischer-Tropsch derived fuel and water, and its use in a compression ignition engine is provided. Emissions, for example of NO, black smoke and/or particulate matter, are lower as compared to conventional fuels but without lengthening the ignition delay and reducing the cetane number. This is achieved without the need for, or at reduced levels of, ignition improving additives, and without engine modifications.
