A wide field fundus camera is disclosed to implement multiple illumination beam projectors and to capture multiple retinal images at a various viewing angles to mimic wide field retinal examination with an indirect ophthalmoscope. The wide field fundus camera may incorporate a consumer image recording device with fast auto focusing so as to make the device quick to respond and easy to use. The wide field fundus camera may include narrow and broad slit beam illuminations to enhance autofocusing and imaging through less transparent crystalline lens and through haze due to Purkinje reflections from crystalline lens surfaces. Control of multiple illumination beam projectors in a programmable manner can be used to assess alignment of each illumination beam projector with the eye and to capture said multiple retinal images. Furthermore, a method is disclosed to montage said multiple retinal images into a single montage and to remove haze and reflections.

Wide field fundus camera

The present invention contemplates an infant eye model for wide field retinal imaging by implementing nominal physical parameters and optical characteristics found in scientific literature and by simulating retinal features and details found in real eye images. The present invention also contemplates implementing a corneal model with a translucent plastic to mimic image haze and 1Purkinje reflection. The present invention also contemplates implementing a birefringent layer to the lens posterior surface to simulate 4Purkinje reflection and its brightness variation. The present invention further contemplates implementing a photo-realistic retinal hemisphere shell to provide retinal details and demonstrate retinopathy associated with retinal diseases.

Eye model for wide field fundus imaging

A wide field fundus camera is disclosed to implement multiple illumination beam projectors and to capture multiple retinal images at various viewing angles to facilitate wide field retinal examination. The wide field fundus camera contemplates an ultra-wide field lens that can provide edge to edge imaging of the entire retina at a single alignment. The wide field fundus camera contemplates configuration of said multiple illumination beam projectors to provide visualization of retina and Purkinje reflections simultaneously to facilitate determination of proper camera alignment with the eye. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates control of multiple illumination beam projectors in a programmable manner to further assess alignment of each illumination beam projector with the eye and to capture said multiple retinal images. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates a consumer image recording device with fast auto focusing and fast continuous image capture to make the device easy to use and quick to respond. The wide field fundus camera further contemplates narrow and broad slit beam illuminations to enhance autofocusing, imaging through less transparent crystalline lens, and reduction of haze due to reflected and scattered light from camera and ocular surfaces other than the retina. The wide field camera contemplates a real-time algorithm to reduce said reflected and scattered light haze in said retinal images. The wide field camera further contemplates automated montage of said multiple retinal images into a single wide field FOV retinal montage and automated removal reflected and scattered light haze from said retinal montage. The wide field camera further contemplates to automatically identify camera alignment with the eye and standardize an alignment procedure to simplify reflected and scattered light haze to facilitate dehaze and auto montage of said retinal images.

Wide field fundus camera with auto-montage at a single alignment

System and method directed towards providing full and even illumination of a patient's retina through lighting integrated into a handheld fundus lens. By integrating the lighting, the method and system reduces and even eliminate many lens artifacts and reflections. By increasing the accuracy, quality, and field of view afforded during clinical examination of the retina, the method and system will allow practitioners to make more accurate diagnoses and will increase safety during retinal surgical procedures.

Self-illuminated handheld lens for retinal examination and photography and related method thereof

System and Method pertaining to the modification and integration of an existing consumer digital camera, for example, with an optical imaging module to enable point and shoot fundus photography of the eye. The auto-focus macro capability of existing consumer cameras is adapted to photograph the retina over an extended diopter range, eliminating the need for manual diopter focus adjustment. The thru-the-lens (TTL) auto-exposure flash capability of existing consumer cameras is adapted to photograph the retina with automatic flash exposure eliminating the need for manual flash adjustment. The consumer camera imaging sensor and flash are modified to allow the camera sensor to perform both non-mydriatic focusing of the retina using infrared illumination and standard color flash photography of the retina without the need for additional imaging sensors or mechanical filters. These modifications and integration of existing consumer cameras for fundus photography of the eye significantly improve ease of manufacture and usability.

The application discloses compositions and methods for preventing and treating diabetic retinopathy. It is disclosed herein that an inhibitor of microRNA-let-7b administered to the eye of a subject in need thereof is useful for preventing and treating several problems associated with diabetic retinopathy and plays a role in vasculature stabilization, increasing retinal thickness, reducing retinal capillary dropout, diminishing microvascular leakage, preventing or treating hyperproliferation of microvascular cells, and stabilizing aberrant neovascularization. The invention includes the use of various kinds of inhibitors of microRNA-let-7b, including, but not limited to, an antagomir of miRNA-let-7b. A useful compound of the invention can be administered into the eye, including intravitreally. A useful antagomir is Dy547-mA(*)mA(*)mCmCmAmCmAmCmAmAmCmCmUmAmCmUmAmCmCmU(*) mC(*)mA (*)(3'-Chl).

Compositions and methods for treating diabetic retinopathy

Apparatus and techniques can include using one or more of a portable or fixed optical system to obtain images of a desired anatomical target, such as the fundus region of a human eye. The optical system can include one or more of a laser-based focusing target, a laser-based fixation target, or a removable or adjustable alignment assembly. Such an alignment assembly can provide or allow user alignment based on using anatomical landmarks other than the fundus being imaged. One or more of the apparatus or techniques can be implemented in an optical assembly included as a portion hand-held fundus camera, such as including or using a consumer or commercial digital camera to capture an image.
