A round cutting insert has a seating surface with a plurality of projections formed on the seating surface proximate a central opening. The projections do not extend to an outer perimeter of the seating surface such that the outer perimeter is continuous and uninterrupted a full 360 degrees. An insert-receiving pocket includes a seating surface with a plurality of dimples for receiving the plurality of projections to prevent rotation of the cutting insert when mounted in the insert-receiving pocket. The plurality of dimples do not extend to an outer perimeter of the seating surface such that the outer perimeter is continuous and uninterrupted a full 360 degrees, thereby maximizing contact between the cutting insert and the pocket.

A toolholder support member for retaining the shank of a toolholder has a bore to accept the toolholder shank. A retention member extends through the bore wall to engage a perforation extending through the shank or indentation within the shank, thereby retaining the shank within the receiving bore. The retention member is biased to provide resistance for insertion or extraction of the shank within the receiving bore. Furthermore, the retention bore is angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the receiving bore so that the force required to insert the toolholder within the receiving bore is minimized, while the force required to extract the toolholder from the receiving bore is maximized.

A cutting insert rotated about its axis may be utilized during a metalworking operation and applied against the rotating workpiece to enhance tool performance. The cutting insert is secured within a toolholder having features to secure the insert but at the same time make for efficient removal of the insert from the toolholder.

A cutting insert rotated about an axis may be utilized during a metal working operation and applied against the rotating workpiece to enhance tool performance. Coolant may be provided through the central bore of the cutting insert utilizing bypass ports around the threaded hold-down bolts. Additionally, the cutting insert may be held within the toolholder pocket utilizing hoop walls which follow a serpentine path to provide flexibility. Finally, relative rotation of the cutting insert with respect to the toolholder body may be prevented utilizing a pair of protrusions within the toolholder pocket which engage a pair of recesses within a side of the cutting insert.

Toolholder

A clamp pin tool holder for clamping an insert in a tool holder includes a bore for receiving a clamp pin and a bore for receiving a lock screw. The clamp pin includes a cam portion with angled surfaces. The lock screw is rotatably mounted to the bore of the tool holder and includes angled surfaces for engaging the angled surfaces of the clamp pin. When the lock screw is rotated in one direction, one angled surface on the lock screw and one angled surface on the clamp pin engage each other an acts as a conical wedge to cause the clamp pin to move relative to the lock screw. When the lock screw is rotated in the opposite direction, another angled surface on the lock screw engages a different angled surface on the clamp pin in a similar manner to cause the clamp pin to move in an opposite direction.

Clamp pin tool holder

A face hobbing cutter including a cutter body having a top surface and a bottom surface and a side surface extending between the top surface and the bottom surface. A plurality of slots are formed within the cutter body extending from the top surface inward into the cutter body. The slots are adapted to receive cutting blades wherein each cutting blade is fixed in position in the respective slot by a wedge clamping assembly. The wedge clamping assembly includes a wedge block and a wedge screw for operatively securing the wedge block within the respective slot. The wedge block includes an outwardly facing locking surface for engaging a side of the cutting blade. The face hobbing cutter further includes an adjustable stop. The adjustable stop is in communication with the slot to support the cutting blade at the desired height from the top surface of the face hobbing cutter.
