L-serine compositions, methods and uses for treating neurodegenerative diseases and disorders

Presented herein are compositions comprising L-serine, or a precursor, derivative or conjugate thereof, and a non-toxic metal, such as zinc. Compositions disclosed herein can be used for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, or related symptoms thereof.

Compositions comprising a metal and L-serine, and uses thereof

The present disclosure describes a gummy dosage form including: an amino acid in an amount of about 20% by weight or greater; a hydrophilic bulking agent; and a hydrophilic long-chain polymer, wherein at least a portion of the hydrophilic long-chain polymer comprises low methoxyl pectin. The gummy dosage forms can further include additives such as flavorants, fiber, and pH-adjusters. The disclosure further comprises methods for preparing such gummy dosage forms, wherein a hydrophilic bulking agent, a hydrophilic long-chain polymer, and water are combined to give a mixture and heated to give a hydrocolloid system in the form of a slurry; mixing an amino acid with the slurry; and setting the resulting mixture to give the gummy dosage form.

Methods for screening for neurological disorders are disclosed. Specifically, methods are disclosed for screening for neurological disorders in a subject by analyzing a tissue sample obtained from the subject for the presence of elevated levels of neurotoxic amino acids or neurotoxic derivatives thereof associated with neurological disorders. In particular, methods are disclosed for diagnosing a neurological disorder in a subject, or predicting the likelihood of developing a neurological disorder in a subject, by determining the levels of &#x3b2;-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in a tissue sample obtained from the subject. Methods for screening for environmental factors associated with neurological disorders are disclosed. Methods for inhibiting, treating or preventing neurological disorders are disclosed.

Screening for neurotoxic amino acid associated with neurological disorders

An immunoassay for screening a sample to detect the presence of &#x3b2;-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is disclosed. Antibodies specific for BMAA are disclosed. Antibodies that bind to BMAA on immunoblots are disclosed. Immunoassays and kits to detect the presence of BMAA in a sample by contacting the sample with an antibody that binds to BMAA, and detecting the antibody bound to the sample, are disclosed. Immunoassays and kits for screening for the presence of BMAA in a subject by analyzing a tissue sample obtained from the subject to detect the present of BMAA in the tissue sample, where the presence of BMAA in the tissue sample indicates exposure of the subject to an environmental source of BMAA, are disclosed. Immunoassays and kits for detecting an environmental source of BMAA, by screening an environmental sample to detect the presence of BMAA in the sample, wherein the presence of a detectable amount of BMAA in the sample indicates the sample is an environmental source of BMAA, are disclosed.

Immunoassay for detection of neurotoxic amino acid associated with neurological disorders

The present invention relates to an antiviral composition and to methods of treating patients with viral infections. The antiviral composition of the present invention comprises prostratin, a phorbol ester derivative, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The present composition while having antiviral activity does not have substantial tumor promoting activity and does not have other substantial adverse toxicological properties that would preclude its use in antiviral therapy.
