This invention is directed to novel crystalline chain extended polymers containing segments of crystalline poly(aryl ether ketones). The novel materials are easy to prepare and display excellent toughness, fabricability and very good high temperature and solvent resistance.

Chain-extended poly(aryl ether ketones)

Novel poly(aryl ether sulfone)-poly(aryl ether ketone) block copolymers are described. They are prepared by the nucleophilic polycondensation of a hydroxy- or halo-terminated poly(aryl ether ketone) oligomer with the poly(aryl ether sulfone) forming reagents; alternatively, a preformed poly(aryl ether sulfone) block may be used. The novel copolymers are tough materials with excellent heat, solvent, and stress-crack resistance. They display high HDT's (heat distortion temperatures) and are useful in molding, extrusion and composites applications.

Poly(aryl ether sulfone)-poly(aryl ether ketone) block copolymers

Described are crystalline block copolymers displaying high glass transition temperatures, excellent mechanical properties, excellent chemical and thermal stability, and good melt processability. These block polymers contain segments of crystalline poly(aryl ether ketones).

Described herein are blends having increased crystallization rates comprising (a) at least 98 percent by weight of a poly(aryl ether ketone) having a melting point no more than about 390.degree. C., and (b) 2 percent by weight or less of another poly(aryl ether ketone) having a melting point higher than about 400.degree. C. The blends retain their attractive crystallization behavior even after prolonged treatment in the melt. The blends of this invention may be fabricated into any desired shape, for example, moldings, coatings, films, fibers, and particularly, for use as electrical insulation for electrical conductors.

Described herein is a novel process for the preparation of poly(aryl ether ketones). The process comprises reacting an activated dihalobenzenoid compound with a diphenol and/or in self-condensing a halophenol whose halogen atom is activated towards nucleophilic substitution reactions. The polymerizations are performed at high temperatures, in an aprotic solvent, and in the presence of a base. The base comprises sodium carbonate or bicarbonate and a potassium, rubidium or cesium salt of an organic acid.
