An ignition system for igniting fuel in a gas turbine or diesel engine is described. The system includes a magnetic core-coil assembly having a magnetic core comprising at least one tape wound toroid of ferromagnetic amorphous metal alloy, a primary winding and a secondary winding. Also included are driver electronics for applying voltage to a spark plug to cause a spark to ignite the fuel. The core-coil assembly and driver electronics are capable of operating with a rapid charge and discharge cycle to produce a high spark pulse rate. In another aspect, a magnetic core-coil assembly is disclosed which has a magnetic core comprising at least one tape wound toroid of ferromagnetic amorphous metal alloy having a permeability ranging from about 250 to 500, a primary winding for low voltage excitation and a secondary winding for high voltage output.

An avionics display includes a first predefined display area for high priority information and a second predefined display area for normal priority information. A viewing screen is disposed between the avionics display and a design eye point. A first portion of the viewing screen, corresponding to the high priority information, includes metallized tapered waveguides to direct light including the normal priority information at a limited vertical viewing angle and to direct light including the high priority information at an extended vertical viewing angle.

A spark ignition system for igniting fuel in an internal combustion engine is described. The spark ignition system includes a magnetic core-coil assembly having a ferromagnetic amorphous metal magnetic core and driver electronics. The core-coil assembly and driver electronics are capable of operating with a rapid charge and discharge cycle to produce a high spark pulse rate.

A spark ignition system for an internal combustion engine has a capacitive discharge (CD) system connected to a coil-per-plug (CCP) magnetic core-coil assembly. The spark ignition system is connected to a spark plug and is adapted to initiate an ignition wherein a spark is produced across the gap of the spark plug. The spark ignition system includes a magnetic core-coil assembly having an amorphous metal magnetic core, a primary coil and a secondary coil for a high voltage output to be fed to a spark plug. The CD system is charged and rapidly discharged through the primary coil of the magnetic core-coil assembly using a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) as the switch. Operation of the SCR is controlled by circuitry that controls the firing of the spark ignition system. The magnetic core-coil assembly acts as a pulse transformer, so that voltage across its secondary coil is related to the turns ratio of secondary to primary.
