A protector sheet article and method intended for application to the door trim panel of a vehicle door to prevent soiling or damage to the trim panel during vehicle assembly and shipping. The article comprises a sheet of thin flexible plastic film with an outer periphery which generally corresponds to the size and shape of the trim panel. The sheet is provided with a plurality of adhesive coated tab members for engagement with closure areas of the vehicle door to hold the sheet in position on the trim panel.

Automotive door trim panel protector and method of using the same

A protective cover for installation to a vehicle wheel to prevent dirt, dust or foreign substances from entering through openings in the wheel into brake assemblies carried by the wheel is disclosed as comprising a relatively thin, flexible, dirt impervious planar sheet of plastic film having a circular outer periphery sized to substantially cover the wheel. A plurality of closely spaced, relatively small corrugations are formed in the sheet and extend in a circular pattern spaced radially inwardly of the outer periphery to permit the central portion of the sheet to be selectively deflected laterally of the plane of the periphery. Pressure sensitive adhesive is carried by the sheet in a circular area which is generally concentric with the outer periphery and lies radially outwardly of the corrugations.

A transfer adhesive sandwich includes a flexible carrier sheet having an adhesive layer releasably bonded to one surface and having an opposite surface to which the adhesive layer if releasably bondable with substantially less tenacity than the tenacity of the bond between the adhesive layer and the one surface. A plurality of the sandwiches are stacked on top of one another to form a pad from which individual sandwiches are strippable. When the adhesive layer is pressed against a substrate, it adheres to the substrate with a tenacity substantially greater than the tenacity of the bond betweeen the adhesive layer and the one surface of the carrier sheet so that the carrier sheet can be stripped away to leave the adhesive layer on the substrate.

Transfer adhesive sandwich and method of applying adhesive to substrates

A transfer adhesive sandwich includes a flexible carrier sheet having an adhesive layer releasably bonded to one surface and having an opposite surface to which the adhesive layer is releasably bondable with substantially less tenacity than the tenacity of the bond between the adhesive layer and the one surface. A plurality of the sandwiches are stacked on top of one another to form a pad from which individual sandwiches are strippable. When the adhesive layer is pressed against a substrate, it adheres to the substrate with a tenacity substantially greater than the tenacity of the bond between the adhesive layer and the one surface of the carrier sheet so that the carrier sheet can be stripped away to leave the adhesive layer on the substrate.

Transfer adhesive sandwich for applying adhesive to substrates

A laminated article particularly useful for forming shoe upper and a method of forming the same. The method generally comprises applying a thin and relatively uniform thickness layer of pressure sensitive adhesive to a release coated surface of a first thin and flexible sheet of material. The adhesive is applied in a regular discontinuous pattern having a multiplicity of small areas separated by pressure sensitive adhesive coated areas. The adhesive is allowed to cure or dry on the first sheet and, thereafter, the adhesive coated face of the first sheet is aligned with a second sheet of foam material and brought into contact therewith under sufficient pressure to bond the adhesive to the foam sheet. The release coated first sheet is left in place on the cured adhesive until it is desired to bond the sheet of foam material to a third sheet of flexible material, such as a sheet of shoe upper material. With the first sheet removed, the sheet of foam material can be aligned with the third sheet and bonded thereto through the application of pressure either manually or with squeeze rolls. Because the adhesive is applied in a discontinuous pattern with a multiplicity of small open areas and then dried or cured on the release sheet, it is neither absorbed into the foam sheet nor does it affect the flexibility or breathability of the foam sheet. The foam sheet thus retains the proper feel, and when joined to the third sheet, results in a composite or laminate structure having the desired characteristics.

Transfer method of applying adhesive to substrates

A mask for and method of masking a workpiece which has some predetermined continuous demarcation zone whereby precise painting of a first area disposed on one side of the zone is accommodated. The mask includes opposed faces and a peripheral edge or contour having substantially the same conformation as the demarcation zone. One face includes a narrow band of adhesive extending therearound adjacent the peripheral edge. The mask is accurately positioned on the workpiece to precisely mask a second area thereof along and on the other side of the demarcation zone from the workpiece first area. The first area may then be painted and the mask thereafter removed. To accommodate application in production environments, the other or outer face of the mask may be release coated so that a stack or pad comprised of a plurality of identical masks may be provided at a workstation for individual application to consecutive workpieces. When such a pad is generated, a plurality of mask layers are first prepared so as to have an adhesive band of the desired conformation on the one face thereof. Thereafter, the plurality of layers are placed in a stacked relationship to each other and then die cut to have a predetermined peripheral edge or contour. The subject mask and method are advantageously useable with any number of painting applications having regular and/or irregular demarcation zone conformations.

Area coated paint mask and method

A method of masking a workpiece at a demarcation zone to facilitate precise spray painting of a workpiece first area on one side of the zone. The method includes providing a mask which has an adhesive backing on one face thereof and a protective liner removably secured to the adhesive backing. The liner is cut or severed so that the resultant sever line has the same conformation therealong as that desired for the demarcation zone. That section of liner associated with the portion of the mask to be affixed to a workpiece second area on the opposite side of the demarcation zone from the workpiece first area is removed from the mask. Thereafter, the mask may be affixed to have the liner sever line precisely aligned with the demarcation zone. Pressure is exerted against the mask at a thin pressure zone coextensive with the demarcation zone to automatically lift that portion of the mask which overlaps the workpiece first portion at and along the demarcation zone to generally form an acute angle therewith. The workpiece first area may then be spray painted from a direction generally normal to the workpiece plane at least adjacent the demarcation zone. The pocket-like area of the mask causes the paint to be feathered toward the demarcation zone and thereby enhance blending of the painted areas precisely along that zone. A paint drape may also be accommodated by and affixed to the mask to protect a larger portion of the workpiece second portion. An alternative construction for the mask employs a thin vinyl sheet material with heat being subsequently applied to effect lifting.
