An article, such as a card of thermoplastic material containing vials, is molded by a method and apparatus which deforms a portion of the mold flash so as to form a reference surface. In a preferred embodiment, the article has a pair of lower walls extending from a central wall in a generally inverted V-shape configuration diverging from an apex which defines a downwardly facing reference surface from which a predetermined reference position can be established for subsequent operations. A conveyor belt can be employed to engage the reference surface and support the article at the reference position.

A method and apparatus are provided for molding a parison of thermoplastic material to form a container with an inwardly extending flange around the container closure. The container body portion is filled with product through an access opening. An insert article serving as the container closure is then positioned within the access opening. The parison is radially compressed inwardly against the insert article to form a bead of thermoplastic material contiguous with the insert article. The bead is then permanently deformed against the insert article axially in the direction of the container body portion. This forms a flange over a portion of the article to retain the insert article on the container while sealing the container.

Method and apparatus for installing an insert to seal a container

A sterilizing method is provided for use with a container filling machine having components defining passages through which a fluid product flows. In one method aspect, sterilizing steam is passed through the components unitl the components have been sterilized. As the system cools and the steam condenses, the system is pressurized with gas to prevent the internal pressure in the system from decreasing below the ambient atmospheric pressure. In a further method aspect, the sterilizing process is controlled in response to sensing the temperature of one or more of the components. In yet another aspect, a common source of sterilizing steam is provided for being directed into the product filling system and simultaneously into an associated process gas supply system to sterilize both systems generally concurrently in a single pass.

Apparatus and method for molding, forming and filling a container having an insert at the container top are disclosed. According to the preferred form of the method and apparatus, a length of a hollow tube parison is extruded and then cut, molded, and filled while positioned between main mold halves. A stopper or like insert is tranferred to a holding and insertion member and when a blowing and filling nozzle has been completely removed from the top opening of the filled container, the blowing and filling nozzle and the insertion member that is carrying the stopper are moved together to position the insertion member and stopper over the container. The insertion member is then moved downwardly to deposit the stopper within the upwardly extending portion of the parison tube. Upper sealing molds are then closed to form the upper portion of the parison around the stopper to partially encapsulate the stopper. A frangible web may also be formed by the upper sealing molds in a portion of the parison circumferentially around and above the stopper while using the insertion member as an anvil. A break-off tab or overcap may be subsequently formed above the stopper at the frangible web by an additional set of upper sealing molds after the insertion member is retracted. In use, the tab may be broken away at the frangible web to expose an upper surface of the stopper and permit access to the stopper.
