An auxiliary lamp for a vehicle. Ordinary headlamps are restricted by law in the intensity that they direct towards oncoming drivers. This can cause inconveniently low illumination to a side of the vehicle, such as along a line 20 or 25 degrees left of center for a left-hand driver side vehicle. An auxiliary headlamp assembly is added to provide an auxiliary beam that supplements the primary beam. The auxiliary beam increases illumination along this line, yet maintains total illumination toward oncoming drivers below allowed limits.

A light module includes a plurality of optical fibers configured as an optical fiber panel, wherein a first end of the plurality of optical fibers is configured into a bundle; a first solid state light source coupled to the bundle; a second solid state light source; and a reflector configured to reflect light rays transmitted from the second solid state light source towards the optical fiber panel. A method of transmitting light includes transmitting a first set of light rays, via a first solid state light source, to a plurality of optical fibers of an optical fiber panel, wherein the first solid state light source is coupled to the plurality of optical fibers; transmitting a second set of light rays, via a second solid state light source, towards a reflector; and reflecting the second set of light rays from the reflector towards the optical fiber panel.

A lighting system for an autonomous vehicle includes one or more optical fiber panels or optical signaling system positioned about a perimeter of the autonomous vehicle; and processing circuitry configured to activate the one or more optical fiber panels or the optical signaling system in a predetermined illumination in response to a status of the autonomous vehicle, wherein the status includes one or more of a time of day, a number of passengers occupied within the autonomous vehicle, and an alert status during operation of the autonomous vehicle.

The light module includes a light source configured to generate a light and a fiber panel optically coupled to the light source. The fiber panel includes a plurality of optical fibers. The plurality of optical fibers are configured to define two illumination regions such that a controlled light is output from the two illumination regions in diametrically opposite directions.
