A two-layer bonded highloft nonwoven particle entrapment pad, for entrapping soils tracked by pets, comprises an open, porous, bonded highloft nonwoven top layer and an otherwise solid, impenetrable bottom layer or structure secured to its underside. The highloft top layer is manufactured from a synthetic material consisting of numerous matrices or cross-over connections which create open porous sieve-like varieties, wherein a web structure of the highloft layer comprises a distinct top, middle, and bottom that is capable of allowing the particles and the litter to enter and be entrapped therein via gravity when stepped upon. A sticky, tackified adhesive maintained on a complex of bonded fibers of the highloft, said adhesive increases its holding capacity as does mechanical abrasion to the top surface of the highloft nonwoven. The present bonded, highloft pad can be manufactured from a variety of densities, deniers and depths from an airlaid, a drylaid, or a wetlaid process.

The present invention deals with the ability to transform a variety of inert, synthetic, popular, modern nonwovens and other filamentous materials into reactive products having a wide and diverse varying nature due to the coatings that can be successfully applied. This principle holds true especially for the web forming nonwovens of which the high lofts are an ideal dimensional matrix material, for not only having a good carrying capacity for a wide variety of active ingredients, but can scrub and entrap soils and particles as well, sometimes simultaneously. The active ingredient is held and protected within the open cell of the carrier media by means of an adhesion enhancing agent, such as a tackifier, that is coated on the fibers of the nonwoven carrier.

A lightweight, absorbent, disposable pad, and particularly to a lightweight, absorbent, disposable pad that entraps particles, retains liquid, and eliminates odors is provided. The pad can be used in a variety of ways in households, automobiles, and industry. The instant abstract is neither intended to define the invention disclosed in this specification nor intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way.

Absorbent pad for entrapping small and coarse particles, retaining liquids and eliminating odors

The invention relates to a diagnostic system for testing animal urine and includes a device for the collection of the urine. The system uses granular particles which are nonabsorbent particles having sufficiently large diameter to provide sufficient interparticle spacing to permit free flow of urine from the particles to the collection region below. The base of the litter box can serve as the urine collector, but preferably, a moisture impermeable liner provides this function. In the use of the instant device for diagnostic purposes, the urine is allowed to pass through the grit, due to its non absorbency, into collection areas. Early evidence of many diseases can be detected, as well as the monitoring of ongoing treatment, through urine analysis. The grit can be used in combination with waffle type support inserts, plastic liners or a spacer member.

Diagnostic system for use with small animals

The invention relates to the prevention of the odor caused by the action of bacteria on cat urine in a cat litter box. The cat liter box has a base and walls and is provided with a sorbtive-desiccant member for the collection of animal urine. Litter is in direct moisture transfer contact with the sorbtive-desiccant member. The odor prevention process includes the steps of transferring cat urine directly from granular particles, to the sorbtive-desiccant member, sorbing the urine in a sorbtive-desiccant member having high surface area and high urine sorbency, dispensing the urine quickly in said sorbtive-desiccant member, and evaporating said urine from said high surface area sorbtive-desiccant member through the granular particles. The sorbtive-desiccant member maintains the urine in a medium which subjects the bacteria in the urine to the effects of drying. The granular particles are non-absorbent particles having sufficiently large diameter to provide sufficient interparticle spacing to permit free flow of urine from the particles to the sorbtive-desiccant member and the free flow of moisture from said sorbtive-desiccant member to the air. The base of the litter box prevents urine from leaving one side of said sorbtive-desiccant member. Thereby the bacteria, which are capable of breaking down cat urine, die or become dormant and thus prevent significant odor formation.

A claw resistant sorbent pad laminate is employed for the collection of animal urine. The laminate includes a bottom sheet layer of moisture impermeable material, an intermediate sorbent layer of material having a high sorbency capacity for urine, a top claw resistant screen means. The laminate is secured to a container by means of securing means around the periphery of the bottom sheet layer. In one emodiment of the invention the securing means is an elasticized area or areas around the periphery of the moisture impermeable material. In an alternate embodiment a drawstring is movably affixed to the periphery of the bottom sheet layer.

Odorless animal litter unit having securing means

The formation of the odor associated with cat litter boxes is prevented by inhibiting the bacterial action on cat urine. A sorbent pad structure is positioned between a protective screening, capable of withstanding the clawing action of a cat, and a moisture impermeable liner. The cat urine is transferred directly from overlying litter particles, through a cat claw resistant screen into a sorbtive-desiccant member of fibers and having high surface area and high urine sorbency. The urine disperses quickly from fiber to fiber in the sorbtive-desiccant member. The moisture impermeable sheet prevents urine from leaving the side of the sorbtive-desiccant member opposite the screen. The screen and the fibers of the sorbtive-desiccant member provide for aeration, thus inhibiting the growth and bacterial action of bacteria as well as the evaporation of the urine from the sorbtive-desiccant member. Consequently, the bacteria die or become dormant thereby preventing significant odor formation.

Odorless animal litter unit

The odorless animal litter box of the instant invention includes a box-like container capable of locking in place an absorbent pad structure, which includes a protective screening and a moisture impermeable liner. The protective screening is flexible and formed of strands bonded at their interstices, is substantially inert to urine and capable of withstanding the clawing action of an animal such as a cat. The sheet layer of moisture impermeable material has length and width dimensions at least equal to that of the screen. A sorbtive-desiccant pad is positioned between the screen and the moisture impermeable material and the screen is sealed to moisture impermeable material along at least a substantial portion of their peripheral edges.

A combination of a litter device for use with cats which has a sorbent pad laminate for the collection of animal urine consisting of a bottom sheet layer of moisture impermeable material in contact with the base and walls of the litter device, an intermediate sorbent layer of material having a high absorbency capacity for urine, a top claw resistant screen and securing device. The securing device removably affixes the sorbent pad laminate to the litter device, thereby preventing the relative movement between the sorbent pad and the litter device which can be caused by the clawing action of an animal.

Securing means for odorless animal litter unit

The combination of a disposable self supporting structure, sorbent pad laminate and litter for the collection of animal urine. The self supporting structure has a base and wall. The sorbent pad laminate includes a moisture impermeable bottom sheet layer in contact with the base and walls, an intermediate sorbent layer of material having a high absorbency capacity for urine, a top claw resistant screen and litter granules. The screen is a urine permeable, flexible member of material which is substantially inert to urine. The screen is formed of strands which are bonded at their intersections and have sufficient tear strength to withstand the clawing action of a cat. The screen must also have sufficiently small hole size to protect the sorbent layer and sheet layer of moisture impermeable material from being torn by animal claws. The bottom sheet layer and top screen are bonded to each other along at least a substantial portion of the screen's periphery. The self supporting structures are manufactured from disposable materials and can be used with the aforenoted sorbent pad laminate or a modified sorbent pad. The modified sorbent pad includes the bottom sorbent layer and screen which have been affixed to the self supporting structure. The self supporting structure in this embodiment must be coated with or manufactured from a moisture impermeable material.

The combination of a sorbent pad laminate and a litter device for the collection of animal urine having a bottom sheet layer of moisture impermeable material, overlying the base of the device, an intermediate sorbent layer of material having a high sorbency capacity for urine and a top claw resistant screen. The bottom sheet layer and top screen are bonded to each other along at least a substantial portion of the periphery of the screen. The screen is a urine permeable, flexible member of nonwoven material which is substantially inert to urine, formed of strands randomly fused together at their intersections and having sufficient tear strength to withstand the clawing action of a cat.

A disposable animal litter pad is combined with a moisture impermeable bag for easy disposal. The litter pad includes a sorbent pad laminate for the collection of animal urine and a top claw resistant screen made of a urine permeable, flexible member of material substantially inert to urine. The disposable animal litter pad laminate has a bottom layer of two sheets of moisture impermeable material peripherally sealed together along three sides to form a bag like structure. The sorbent pad laminate also includes a sorbent layer of material, positioned adjacent the moisture impermeable material, and having a high sorbtion capacity for urine. Disposal is accomplished by reversing the bag over the litter pad, thereby enclosing the litter pad, along with the animal waste and litter and facilitating disposal.

The odor preventing animal litter unit employs the use of a pad consisting of a non-absorbent film, a very absorbent pad treated with a buffer and other antibacterial, bacteriocidal compounds and a protective ripproof screening, which can be used in a specifically designed container or in independent containers. The chemical additives and absorbent material prevent the urine odor and the non-absorbent film prevents leakage during disposal. The ripproof screen prevents animal accessability to the inner pad materials. The complete pad unit is disposable.
