A material susceptible to dielectric heating has a base polymeric thermoplastic material () and a dielectric heating susceptor () which increases susceptibility to heating by irradiation with electromagnetic, for example RF or microwave, radiation. The dielectric heating susceptor has a polymeric material () such as PVDF which is different from the base polymeric material and has a higher dielectric loss factor than the base polymeric material. The dielectric heating susceptor also comprises electrically polarisable entities such as carbon black dispersed within the base polymeric material without forming a conductive network. The two susceptor materials in combination with the base polymer are particularly effective together at improving susceptibility to electromagnetic radiation heating of the whole material.

The embodiments of the present disclosure present systems and methods for the reversible solubilization of (aryl ether ketones) (PAEKs). A thioacetalization process is employed to modify the PAEKs into poly (aryl ether thioacetals) which, unlike PAEKs, are substantially soluble in common solvents. This modification allowing selected analysis techniques to be more easily performed on PAEKs, such as gel permeation chromatography. The thioacetalization may be reversed through a deprotection reaction to recover the original PAEK without substantial degradation, allowing for non-destructive characterization of the PAEK. Advantageously, the thioacetalization process is generally applicable to a broad range of PAEKs, unlike presently known methods of solubilizing PAEKs. Solubilization of PAEKs further expands the utility of the PAEKs, opening up additional routes to chemical modification of PAEKs, as well as allowing for the possibility of processing PAEKs from solution.

Reversible derivatization of poly (aryl ether ketones)

A method of forming a polymer matrix composite using a soluble derivative of a poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK). The method includes mixing a starting PAEK polymer with a solvent and an acid, said solvent being selected from a group consisting of diethylether, tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxin, and chlorinated solvents; reacting the PAEK mixture with a Lewis acid and a thiol compound in amounts effective to form a poly (aryl ether thioacetal) compound which comprises at least one thioacetal group; and impregnating a plurality of fibers in a solution comprising said poly (aryl ether thioacetal) compound.

Engineered crosslinked thermoplastic particles are useful for interlaminar toughening of pre-pregs and composite materials.

A thermoplastic polymer toughening material in the form of polymeric fibers produced by mixing at least one epoxy curing agent and a thermoplastic polyaromatic polymer to form an admixture, and producing polymeric fibers from the admixture, wherein the thermoplastic polymer toughening material does not include an epoxy resin, and is soluble in an epoxy resin at a temperature lower than a dissolving temperature required by the thermoplastic polymer toughening material without epoxy curing agent.

Process for preparing polyarlethers

A polymer composition, a process for its preparation and a molded article formed from the polymer composition are claimed. The polymer composition comprises (a) a base polymer that is a poly(alkyl(meth)acrylate; and (b) a rubber toughening agent selected from the group consisting of (i) copolymers of (alkyl)acrylate rubbers, (ii) copolymers of vinyl aromatic monomers with (alkyl)acrylates, (iii) copolymers of vinyl aromatic monomers with conjugated diolefins; (iv) copolymers of vinyl aromatic monomers with monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, in which the rubber toughening agent is present in the polymer composition as discrete islands substantially surrounded by the base polymer and in which islands are sub-islands of the base polymer.

Polymer composition

A curable composition including a thermoset resin a curing agent component, an amount of a thermoplast component having reactive pendant and/or end groups, an organometallic curing catalyst component.
