A digital printing apparatus is controlled to provide a roughly consistent output rate, of printed sheets per minute, regardless of the size and orientation of the output print sheets. In one embodiment, the printer outputs short-edge-fed legal or A3 sheets within 25% of the rate it can output long-edge-fed letter or A4 sheets.

An automatic apparatus and method for controlling and enabling clean and convenient clearance of a stalled copy sheet from a copy sheet handling system of an electrostatographic reproduction machine. The automatic apparatus and method include a programmable controller for declaring detection of an error in copy sheet movement; position determiner for determining a first actual position of the copy sheet at a moment of detection of an error. The position determiner means includes a first sensing device mounted upstream of an image transfer station of the machine relative to a direction of sheet movement, and a second sensing device, mounted downstream of the first sensing device relative to the direction of sheet movement. The automatic apparatus and method also include sheet control and moving device connected to the programmable controller for changing a position of the copy sheet from the first actual position to one of a downstream and an upstream new and convenient sheet removal positions, depending on the first actual position of the copy sheet relative to the first sensing device and the second sensing device.

As the cover is slid back to its home position, the springs pull the cover and idler rollers into proper alignment with mating drive rollers.

The bypass transport fits into an output tray of the finisher and is powered by the printer. Alignment is accomplished by the use of two switches on the mating end of the bypass transport that have plunger type actuators that are actuated with minimal contact with the separate finisher in order to indicate correct or incorrect docking of the separate finisher with the bypass transport.
