Main job production progress is monitored so that sample copies of parts of the main job that are designated critical or representative of the job as a whole can be produced on a regular interrupting basis. The samples are used to monitor production quality. Digital printing system modules are arranged and configured to provide a sample job destination separate from the main job destination.

Use of job interrupt functionality for the production of interrupting and sample job output in digital printing systems

A method to program a printer includes initiating a save conflict mode and saving a user defined conflict by either storing print job attributes in a conflict list while in the save conflict mode or storing at least one of a policy, a capability and a constraint based on the print job attributes while in the save conflict mode. One method to use a printer that has been so programmed includes receiving from a user at least one job attribute that causes a conflict, checking the at least one received job attribute against the stored print job attributes, determining whether a conflict condition exists, and displaying a conflict message when the conflict condition is determined to exist. Another method to use a printer that has been so programmed includes receiving from a user at least one job attribute that causes a conflict, checking for an itinerary to process a sheet according to the at least one received job attribute, determining whether an itinerary is unavailable due to a conflict condition, and displaying a conflict message when the itinerary is unavailable due to a conflict condition.

Dynamic addition of programming conflicts for programming conflict checking

The concept of a document assembly tree is extended to include in nodes, such as a node describing a sheetor a node describing a compilation, a sample interval specification. The sample interval specification is interpreted as a request to produce sample copies of the part of a job described by the node every time the sample interval specified in the node has transpired. An image reproduction system enables an operator to switch between different sets of finishing instructions by switching a shadow job ticket between an active state and an inactive state. A method to print images on media sheets prints test patterns in an interrupt mode while printing the main job in a regular mode. The method includes marking a first group of images on a corresponding first group of sheets, marking a test pattern on a first test pattern sheet, marking a second group of images on a corresponding second group of sheets, delivering the first test pattern sheet to a sample tray, and passing the first and second groups of sheets to a finishing module. In a varient, the first test pattern sheet follows the first group of sheets in a sequence, the second group of sheets follows the first test pattern sheet in a sequence, and the second group of images follows the first group of images in a sequence.
