A system and method to effectively and efficiently update a version of firmware resident in a device memory is provided. A method of identifying one or more versions of firmware is provided by way of initializing a device memory with a known pattern. In addition, the amount of free unused memory space may be identified and calculated in a device memory. The system and method generates software update packages that are minimal in size providing cost benefit to a manufacturer and convenience to a user.

Initialization and update of software and/or firmware in electronic devices

One or more methods and systems of updating software in wireless communication devices are presented. In one embodiment, software updates are generated by a generation environment and distributed by a distribution environment. One or more wireless communication devices receive one or more software updates from the distribution environment. In one embodiment, software updates are generated from processing performed at a pre-processing device such as a cable television set-top-box or a server of the distribution environment. A software processing package, provided by the generation environment, is used to generate such software updates for the one or more wireless communication device. One or more methods of provisioning and billing wireless communication devices are also presented.

Network for updating firmware and / or software in wireless communication devices

A generator for generating an update package for efficiently updating the software and/or firmware in an electronic device, and a method for operating such a generator are disclosed. An embodiment of the disclosed invention may produce a compact update package comprising a set of instructions that may be executed within the electronic device to produce an updated binary image of the software and/or firmware. Pre-processing of the existing or new binary image may result in a further reduction in the size of the update package, shortening the time needed to transmit the update package to the electronic device.

The present invention discloses efficient devices, systems, and methods for updating digital information sequences that are comprised by software (), devices (), and data (). In addition, these digital information sequences may be stored and used in various forms, including but not limited to files, memory locations, and/or embedded storage locations. Disclosed herein is a component architecture platform (CAP) framework that provides a mechanism to update firmware, drivers, and/or application software in an embedded system, such as in mobile electronic devices. The framework also facilitates access to generated update packages by the embedded system and provides updates to firmware, drivers, content or application software in a fault tolerant mode. Generation of update packages is more efficient and the update packages employing CAP are more compact than prior solutions. A distributed version of CAP, (DCAP), also provides access to functionality or components located at remote locations on other platforms.

Disclosed herein is an update package generator which may employ a bank order determination module to determine an optimum bank order of memory banks of a binary image of at least one of firmware and software. The bank order may subsequently be employed in generation of an update package, wherein the size of the update package generated by the generator may be minimized. A bank order determination unit may selectively employ one of genetic algorithms and differential evolution techniques to determine an optimum bank order. Other parameters may also be employed in the generator. The generator may also be selectively optimized to employ at least one genetic evolution technique.

Methods for updating an electronic device having a non-volatile memory are disclosed. An embodiment of the present invention may permit the update of an electronic device from a first code version to a second code version using a fault-tolerant, bank-by-bank method. An update package comprising update instructions may be received via a public and/or wireless network, and the update instructions may be used to convert the first code version to the second code version. The bank order of the conversion may be specified in the update package, and may be non-sequential.
