A method of making a lid for a casket comprises providing tooling configured to produce a one-piece, unitary casket lid having a crown, a pie, a rim and a header, providing settable material from which to mold the lid, molding the settable material with the tooling, permitting the settable material to set thereby producing a one-piece, unitary casket lid having a crown, a pie, a rim and a header, and adhesively applying a wood veneer sheet to at least a portion of the lid. The veneer sheet can be applied with either a membrane press or a profile wrapping machine.

Casket lid and method of making same

A method of making a one-piece, unitary lid for a casket comprises providing tooling configured to produce a casket lid having a crown, a pie, a rim and a header, providing settable material, preferably a mixture of wood chips and binder, from which to mold the lid, molding the settable material with the tooling and permitting the settable material to set. The tooling transmits a wood grain pattern into the settable material. The wood grain pattern of the lid is continuous when viewed rotated 180&#xb0; about an axis perpendicular to the plane defined by the lid, located medially of the transverse extent of the lid and coinciding with the header end edge of the lid. Thus two such caps placed end-to-end have a continuous wood grain pattern extending from the head end of the casket to the foot end of the casket. Resin impregnated tissue paper is applied to the settable material prior to molding. The resin impregnated tissue paper conforms to the wood grain and conceals the wood chips.

A casket comprises a shell including a floor, a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls. A pair of caps are closable upon the shell. At least one of the walls is constructed of at least two panels having adjacent abutting edges forming a joint between the panels. A decorative feature disguises the joint to create the appearance of the two panels being a single panel. Each cap has a crown, a longer dimension and a shorter dimension, and is constructed of a plurality of boards extending parallel to the longer dimension and including a center spine board. The center spine board is fabricated from a single full-length board sawed in two; remaining ones of thee cap crown boards are non-full length boards. The gap between the head and foot end caps when closed in combination with the matching grain of the spine boards creates the appearance of the cap crowns being constructed of full length boards. Also, by utilizing at least one full length board in the cap, current tooling may be used. Methods of manufacturing such a casket are also provided.

Casket lid and method and making same

A self-supporting body support structure for a casket is provided. The body support structure is fabricated from a sheet of cardboard and comprises a planar body supporting portion having a pair of lateral edges and longitudinal supporting structure along each lateral edge of the body supporting portion for supporting the lateral edges of the body supporting portion above the bottom of the casket. Each longitudinal supporting structure is formed by folding a lateral edge portion of the cardboard sheet beneath the body supporting portion. A plurality of supports is spaced laterally between the longitudinal supporting structures and longitudinally along the length of the body supporting portion and supports the body supporting portion between the longitudinal supporting structures and along the length of the body supporting portion above the bottom of the casket. Each support is formed by folding a first tab potion of the cardboard sheet beneath the body supporting portion.

A method of shipping a burial casket in a knocked-down configuration and subsequently assembling the casket at its point of destination comprises the steps of providing a kit of disassembled casket components assemblable into a casket having a shell and a cap, packing the kit of components into shipping container, shipping the packaged casket kit to a destination point, removing the kit from the container and assembling the casket from the kit utilizing at least a portion of the shipping container as an interior component of the casket. A casket comprises a shell and cap assembled from a kit shipped in knocked-down configuration, a body support structure positioned in the shell for supporting a body and a floor for the casket upon which to support the body support structure in the shell. The body support structure is formed from the bottom of an elongated, shallow, generally rectangular shipping carton in which the casket kit is shipped. The floor is formed from the top of the carton. The top of the carton can also be utilized to form a liquid retaining tray.

A casket shell comprises an elongated inner box and an elongated outer box. The inner box is congruently disposed in the interior region of the outer box and a core is sandwiched between the inner and outer boxes. The core includes a top surface attached to the inner box and a bottom surface attached to the outer box. The core can be made form a closed-celled material or a honeycomb material having a plurality of interconnected cylinders. Both inner and outer boxes are foldable to a generally planar configuration to minimize the volume during shipment. A casket shell in accordance with the present invention can also include a plurality of panels, each panel includes a core having a top surface and a bottom surface, first and second stabilizing surface element attached to the bottom and top surfaces, respectively. The panels connected together by a plurality of connectors to define the casket shell.

A combination comprises a burial casket designed and constructed so as to have a visible theme, a music media storage and display assembly incorporated into the casket selectively movable to and between a generally concealed storage position and a generally exposed display position, and music media including recorded music selected so as to have an audible theme, corresponding to the casket visible theme, stored and displayed in the assembly. The casket includes a shell and head end and foot end caps pivoted to said shell. The foot end cap includes a header board mounted on a head end thereof. The storage and display assembly comprises a platform slidable through the header board to and between the storage and display positions within and without the foot end cap respectively, the platform having a recess therein for receiving the music media, and an ejector mounted to the platform operable to eject the music media from the recess for easy grasping when the platform is moved to the display position.
