The invention relates to a method of preparing directly compressible granular mannitol, wherein a raw material essentially constituted of powder mannitol is subjected to an extrusion treatment inside an installation comprising a heating zone and an extrusion die, the supply flow rate of the installation with raw material as well as the parameters of the extrusion treatment, namely the temperature existing inside the heating zone, the diameter of the extrusion die and the driving speed of the raw material inside the heating zone being selected so that at the exit of the die and before the exit of the mannitol from the latter, the mannitol is partly fused.

A gluconic acid syrup is introduced into a first crystallization zone 1a which it is brought to traverse under stirring and inside which it is maintained at a constant temperature, the mixture syrup and the gluconodeltalactone crystals emerging from this first zone being brought to traverse a second crystallization zone 1b within which it is subjected firstly to a temperature gradient decreasing globally, possibly modulated then to a substantially constant temperature, the mixture emerging from this second zone being in the form of a crystalline mass rich in gluconodeltalactone crystals from which the latter are recovered.

A syrup of mannitol and of sorbitol is introduced through a pipe (2) into a first crystallization zone (1a) which it is led to pass through with stirring (3) and within which the temperature is maintained substantially constant by a system (4), the mixture of syrup and of crystals of mannitol being led through a pipe (8) to a second crystallization zone (1b) which it is led to pass through and within which it is subjected to a temperature gradient decreasing globally possibly modulated by a system of temperature regulation (12), the mixture emerging from this second zone being in the form of a crystalline mass rich in mannitol crystals from which the latter are recovered. A system of recycling (13) leads, in the vicinity of the upper end of the container (1a), a part of the contents of the container (1b) taken up to a level (15).

The invention relates to a granular mannitol directly compressible and free from binder, characterized by the fact that its granulometric fraction from 400 to 500 .mu.m has a friability less than 65% in a test A.

Directly compressible granular mannitol and method for its manufacture

The invention relates to a process for continuous separation of mixtures of sugars and/or polyols. The mixture is fed to an installation comprised of at least 3 adsorbent filled columns connected in series. The columns represent absorption, enrichment and desorption zones respectively. The process provides for the continuous sequential operation of the columns as absorption, enrichment and desorption zones.
