A method of calibrating a flat panel, includes the steps of: providing a flat panel display having an overall and individual channel adjustment for both gain and offset and an adjustment to provide a white point for the display, the white point including color temperature, chromaticity and luminance level; displaying a first target using a low level code value for each channel of the display; sensing the luminance level of the displayed first target; adjusting the gain of the display so that the sensed luminance level matches a first predetermined aim value representing a luminance level at least 3 decades lower than a maximum luminance level; displaying a second target using intermediate code values for each channel of the display device; sensing the luminance level and chromaticities of the displayed second target; adjusting the individual channel offsets so that the luminance level matches a second predetermined aim value representing an intermediate luminance level and the chromaticities match a first set of predetermined chromaticities that represent a desired white point; displaying a third target using maximum code values for each channel of the display; sensing the luminance level and chromaticities of the displayed third target; adjusting the individual channel gains so that the luminance level matches a third predetermined aim value the maximum luminance level and the chromaticities match the first set of predetermined chromaticities; and repeating until no further adjustment is required.

Method for calibrating, characterizing and driving a color flat panel display

A method of calibrating a multichannel display device having an overall and individual channel adjustment for both gain and offset and an adjustment to provide a white point for the display, the white point including color temperature, chromaticity and luminance level, includes the steps of: displaying a first target using a low level code value for each channel of the display; sensing the luminance level of the displayed first target; adjusting the gain of the display so that the sensed luminance level matches a first predetermined aim value representing a luminance level at least 3 decades lower than a maximum luminance level; displaying a second target using intermediate code values for each channel of the display device; sensing the luminance level and chromaticities of the displayed second target; adjusting the individual channel offsets so that the luminance level matches a second predetermined aim value representing an intermediate luminance level and the chromaticities match a first set of predetermined chromaticities that represent a desired white point; displaying a third target using maximum code values for each channel of the display; sensing the luminance level and chromaticities of the displayed third target; adjusting the individual channel gains so that the luminance level matches a third predetermined aim value the maximum luminance level and the chromaticities match the first set of predetermined chromaticities; and repeating the steps of displaying and adjusting until no further adjustment is required in the last step.

Calibration of softcopy displays for imaging workstations

The present invention is a system that uses a single channel light meter to measure the actual red, green and blue light output response curves of a CRT monitor to the range of possible input monitor code values for each color. A computer is used to transform a desired corresponding tone scale through the corresponding response curve to obtain a look-up table or video shaper that calibrates the monitor to the desired corresponding tone scale. The transformation includes obtaining a tone scale intensity value for each possible input value and searching the actual response values for a closest match. The input monitor code value used to obtain the actual response matching intensity for the possible input value is the calibrated value displayed by the monitor when an image includes the possible input value. The system is used throughout the life of the monitor to bring the monitor back to calibration as it changes.
