Implantable materials may be used as spacers for separating tissues to reduce a dose of radioactivity received by one of the tissues. Applications include introducing a hydrogel spacer to a position between a first tissue location and a second tissue location to increase a distance between the first tissue location and the second tissue location, Further, there may be a step of administering a dose of radioactivity to at least the first tissue location or the second tissue location and/or a step of visualizing margins of the hydrogel spacer. A hydrogel spacer may comprise a polysaccharide and a radioopaque agent and may be used for fiducial marking.

Implantable materials may be used in an iatrogenic site. Applications include radiopaque materials for fiducial marking. For instance, a method of treating fiducially marking a patient comprising placing a fiduciary marker in the patient at a tissue in the patient, said marker comprising a collection of pharmaceutically acceptable, covalently-crosslinked hydrolytically biodegradable hydrogel particles into the tissue of the patient, the collection comprising a plurality of the particles having a covalently attached radiopaque agent, with the radiopaque agent being present in the collection at a concentration of at least about 0.1% w/w.

Implants and biodegradable fiducial markers

Certain embodiments relate to a sprayer or other medical apparatus for applying a biocompatible coating in situ. Such an apparatus may have a first conduit connected to a first exit opening and a second conduit connected to a second exit opening to deliver a first composition through the first conduit and a second composition through the second conduit to mix the first composition and the second composition outside both the first conduit and the second conduit. The first composition may be, e.g., a precursor to a material formed after the mixing of the first composition and the second composition. The first exit opening and the second exit opening may be approximately adjacent to each other and define an angle that is less than about 140 degrees.

Applications include a method of treating a patient with a pharmaceutically acceptable implant system comprising implanting a collection of pharmaceutically acceptable, covalently-crosslinked hydrogel particles, wherein the collection comprises a plurality of sets of the particles, with the sets having different rates of biodegradation.

Particulate implants and biodegradable fiducial markers

A pharmaceutically acceptable implant system comprising a collection of pharmaceutically acceptable, covalently-crosslinked hydrogel particles having a radioopaque agent covalently attached to a plurality of the particles in the collection, with the radioopaque agent being present in the collection at a concentration of at least about 0.1% w/w. The implantable materials may be used, for instance, in an iatrogenic site and for fiducial marking.
