In some embodiments according to the present disclosure, calibrated pneumatic otoscopes and retrofit calibration devices are described. In certain aspects of the present disclosure, methods of using calibrated pneumatic otoscopes are described. In certain aspects according to the present disclosure, kits containing pneumatic otoscopes are described. In certain aspects according to the present disclosure, retrofit calibration devices are described.

Calibrated pneumatic otoscope

Embodiments provide a middle ear prosthesis that can be adjusted in situ. The middle ear prosthesis can be inserted into the middle ear of a patient and then, after surgery, the length of, or distance between the end resting on the malleus and the end resting on the stapes, can be adjusted without the need to touch the prosthesis through a surgical intervention. A middle ear prosthesis can include a first element having a first interconnecting end and a malleus end, for resting on a malleus or tympanic membrane, and a second element having a second interconnecting end and a stapes end, for resting on a stapes, where the first and second interconnecting ends interconnect with each other. External forces can be applied to a clamp to actuate release of the clamp and allow for adjustment of the length of the prosthesis in situ.

Method and apparatus for in-situ adjustability of a middle ear prosthesis

A middle ear prosthesis comprises a piston adapted to extend through an oval window when implanted in a human ear. A pair of jaws engage an ossicle when implanted in a human ear. A spring is coupled to the jaws for biasing the jaws toward one another to provide clamping pressure. The jaws are in turn connected to the piston.

Attachment mechanism for middle ear prosthesis

A small volume effusion trap for use with common surgical or medical instruments having a housing unit with two elongate, rigid, hollow members, a vacuum source, and a drainage tube. In an embodiment, a standard, commercially available sample vial attaches to the housing unit to collect the effusion. The sample vial can be utilized directly in standardized diagnostic and/or therapeutic analysis apparatuses. To collect a small volume of effusion, one elongate, rigid, hollow member is connected to standard surgical or medical aspirators and the other elongate, rigid, hollow member is connected to the vacuum line. With suction applied to the elongate, rigid, hollow member, an area of reduced pressure is produced in the sample vial so as to cause aspirated effusion to proceed from the surgical or medical apparatus through the elongate, rigid hollow member into the sample vial.
