A battery thermal shield is used with a battery to reduce peak temperature exposure caused by a short of a battery from physical damage to the battery (e.g., the battery being pierced by a metal object). The thermal shield may be a highly thermal-conductive substance, such as a film, adhesive, gel, and/or other substance, that acts as an efficient heat spreader. Unlike a typical heat sink or heat fins, the thermal shield may have a low profile and be configured to spread a rapid onset of heat at a localized point or area (e.g., a location of an internal short) to a wider area to reduce a peak (maximum) temperature caused by a short of a battery. The thermal shield may be at least partially formed of graphite which may be adhered to the battery.

Battery thermal shield

Portable multimedia devices, and techniques for their manufacture, are provided that feature functional parts embedded with a resin matrix that obviates the need for traditional structural components such as midframes and/or outer casings. The resin matrix may be provided through the use of a flowable liquid resin that is flowed around the functional components within a mold cavity. The liquid resin may then be cured into the resin matrix.

Resin-encapsulated portable media device

A combinatorial test device is configurable to contemporaneously test one or more sensors of output devices free from user intervention. A device under test such as a user device is placed in a test fixture of the combinatorial test device. Under the control and monitoring of a test controller testing takes place. The testing may be performed for quality assurance after assembly or repair, or to determine the reliability of the device such as by testing the device until a particular life cycle value is reached or a component in the device fails.

Combinatorial test device

A non-dispersive infrared gas sensor provides the same light path for light used in a reference mode and a test mode for testing for the presence or concentration of one or more gases. A vacuum is formed in the light pipe in the reference mode. Gas flows into the light pipe before the test mode. The same emitter and detector maybe used for both the test and reference modes. The emitter transmits an electromagnetic wave through the light pipe in both the reference and test modes. The detected signals in both modes are compared to determine the concentration or presence of gas in the light pipe.
